1.0 Project Aim
The aim of this project is to enable you to understand domestic building services and to explore options to improve their sustainability.
2.0 Requirements
You are required to undertake a detailed study of the building services for a domestic building. You will need to select a building as a vehicle for your study. This can be your family home, student accommodation or any other domestic building that you have sufficient information to study.
You will be required to study five separate services, documenting their performance in your study building, reviewing current knowledge for their efficient and sustainable installation and providing recommendations for reducing the overall operational environmental impact of your building.
3.0 Assessment and submission
Assessment of the coursework will be based on the submissions of the following five services, their improvements and recommendations.
1. Cold water intake and distribution
2. Hot water generation and distribution
3. Electricity intake and distribution
4. Sanitary appliances and waste/foul water disposal
5. Space heating generation and distribution
Your submission should include a description of your case study dwelling, the existing cold water and hot water services, the sanitation and above ground drainage, electricity intake and distribution and space heating system. You will require evaluating these systems against the current state of the art in sustainable buildings and make recommendations to improve the environmental impact of your study building.
Your submission should be in the form of a report, which should include:
• A cover sheet
• A content page which contains chapter headings and sub-headings
• Individual chapters
• Conclusion
• Reference and bibliography
• Appendix
Schematic diagrams: you are required to draw the schematics of the services for your building using AUTOCAD or clear technical drawing. Free hand sketches are not acceptable.
The report should be properly bound together in a folder in such a way that it will be easy to open, read and mark.
An assessment feedback sheet is attached to give you an indication of the content and marks breakdown.
4.0 Procedures
• Select an appropriate domestic building as a vehicle for your study
• Describe the building to the level of detail required to analyse the services, for example: location, orientation, size, construction, occupation, operation profiles etc.
• Document and analysis for each of the services as installed in the building:
o clear description with the help of annotated sketches or photographs
o a schematic diagram for each service that shows the system as installed
o critical appraisal of the efficiency and performance of each service
o review recent publications and innovations concerning each service
o recommend improvement to each system and detail the expected impact
• Recommend additional services or other changes to the building to improve its sustainability
5.0 Development and support
Generic building services for domestic buildings will be covered through lectures. Attendance for these lectures is compulsory. Students are expected to develop further understanding of the systems and their applications through reading of articles in books, journals and online materials. Tutorials will be provided at the end of each lecture and they are scheduled in the lecture programme to support the development of the project. Non-scheduled tutorial support will only be provided to students who have attended the lectures and tutorials.
6.0 Reference
Students are expected to use a wide range of materials in this coursework, which should be clearly referenced and cited in the report. The scope and range of the reference will be discussed in the tutorials. Students should take notice of the information posted on Studentcentral and the updates in the reading list Aspire.
