Rhetoric Analysis essay

This is a Rhetoric Analysis essay.

For your first writing assignment, you will write a 3-4 page rhetorical analysis of a commercial. This assignment is not an merely an overview of a Captain Morgan’s ad, for example. Instead, for this paper, you will identify the major claims that an advertiser is making and will discuss how the advertiser structures those claims. Your opinion on the product is irrelevant–for now. We often have to stand back from the issues to survey the research. That is what you’re going to do in this case. In other words, you’re not going to be writing a narrative, or for/against paper, per say. Rather, your paper is going overview some one else’s arguments and identify how that argument is structured. For instance, you may (or may not) have an opinion about Captain Morgan’s rum, but you can overview the claims that the company presents in its ad. I would this paper’s topic to be on the following commercial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0VOM7e5Hug

Organizing the Paper:
As with all writing assignments you will be composing this semester, your rhetorical analysis should contain an introduction with a thesis, a body containing the bulk of your analysis, and a conclusion. The introduction should state which commercial you will be analyzing, the product/ company it is advertising, any relevant background information, provide a brief synopsis of the commercial, and state your thesis. The body will go into further detail in analyzing the various elements used in the commercial and explaining their significance. The conclusion of your paper may evaluate the ad’s arguments and offer your own thoughts or opinions.

Audience. As for all writings this semester, this paper will be written for your classmates and your instructor. Therefore, you need to assume that your readers have not seen the commercials you are writing about. This means that your paper will have to background and clarify the content of the commercial that you cite in your paper.

Readings. For this assignment, you will choose one commercial from those in the folder on ANGEL. If you would like to write about a different commercial, one that is not included in the folder provided, you must first send me a link to the commercial. I will look at it to make sure it will work for the assignment and then get back to you with the verdict.

Citation. For this assignment, outside research is optional; the only thing you absolutely must cite is your commercial. As The Little, Brown Handbook does not provide the citation format, I have included it here.

“Name of Commercial/Product.” Commercial. Station or website. Date accessed (day month year). .

Example: “Miller Lite Man Law: High Five.” Commercial. You Tube. 17 Nov. 2006
