Many of you were enthusiastic about the questions posed in our classes on Roman spectacle and early Christian imagery. One issues that was raised in a number of response papers was whether the violence we consume today (e.g., in movies) is on par with the exposure to violence we know took place in the amphitheater. Using our source materials on ancient spectacle, write an essay exploring this question, but then relate it directly to the imagery we associate with Jesus and/or the Jesus movement. Is Christianity, from its beginnings, an inherently violent religion?
