Community Assessment

PURPOSE: To give you the opportunity to increase your familiarity with and gain a new perspective on the community you are working within.PROFILE: Get a profile of the population within your community – ages, income, racial/cultural make up, heads of households (female headed household, single, family, etc.)ASSESSMENT: Based on what you learn and what your sense is of the community provide an assessment of the community.EXAMPLES OF ITEMS TO BE FOUND:Schools Shopping Centers24-hour convenience stores e.g. 7/11 Youth AgencyYouth hangouts Fast food restaurantsRestaurants Senior CentersParks/Recreation family areas (beach, pools) Social/Human Services Organizations VFW/Knights of ColumbusPolice Stations or where police are seenWealthy, middle class, or lower class areasCommunities within the Community e.g. senior housing (Leisure Glen)Bus Routes/Trains, transportationThese are ideas of what you should look for in your community. Please add to this if there are other places in your community that you think are important in gaining a better understanding of your community. You may keep your “hunting” to those places that pertain to the population that you are working with if you need to. Feel free to discuss the community with your field instructor and others in the agency as well.Remember: Drive around the community so you get a sense of what it’s like. Tell me about what you learned when driving around town. Write about what you are thinking and feeling as you drive around. Tell me why you have made an assessment about the community (e.g. I think this is a poorer neighborhood because the cars in the driveway are old and there are houses that have not been painted for awhile).PAPER: 3 – 5 pages. Make sure you include the demographics, the assessment and “the feel” of the community, and what you think are positives aspects and negative aspects of the community. Make sure you list the names of the places you find and how accessible they are to the population you serve. You may look at the communities next to yours if your community doesn’t offer much to its residents.Sources:http://www.city-data.com/city/Stony-Brook-New-York.htmlhttp://www.stonybrook.com/about/demographics.aspxhttp://www.census.gov/quickfacts/table/PST045215/3671608
