As we’ve seen, one of the major themes of this course has been the inextricable connection between race and class. In her article “A Theory of Ethnic Antagonism: The Split Labor Market1,” Edna Bonacich argues that a split labor market, i.e. one in which there is a large differential in wages paid for the same occupation, is not a direct response to the race of those entering the labor market, but is rather a response to other economic/resource factors of which race is merely a correlate. Evaluate Bonacich’s argument. Support and defend your assessment with at least three pieces of evidence from class and the readings.
The book in class is “A Different Mirror” by Ronald Takaki
