Using Five Days at Memorial and one or two articles assigned during the term, discuss the relationship between the content an author communicates and the manner in which he or she chooses to communicate it.

Your final analytical paper will require considerable thought and creativity. Your guidelines are quite open, a condition that will force you to adopt a position of authority regarding the concerns we have addressed in the class.
Using Five Days at Memorial and one or two articles assigned during the term, discuss the relationship between the content an author communicates and the manner in which he or she chooses to communicate it. More to the point, using these texts as evidence, discuss how an author’s rhetorical decisions affect the manner in which the audience receives her work.
Although you will not have enough space to discuss the whole book, you should be able to assimilate the primary concerns of Five Days well enough to discuss its overarching message and include specific phrases or passages in support of your argument. Your essay should not recite class discussion, and your readings of the articles and book should be original in some way.
The following questions might help to guide your thinking. You are not required to answer these questions: they are here simply to help you.
 Would you have responded to Five Days in the same manner if it had been written in the style of a newspaper report?
 Are there times in which a more formal tone is appropriate to presenting information or directions? A less formal tone? How do grammar and diction affect tone?
 Does the familiar approach to writing—that is, a style that sounds conversational—augment or diminish the trust engendered by the author (i.e., your faith in the author’s sincerity or authority)?
 How does an employee define herself in the context of the corporation for which she works? In what ways does that corporation reflect the ethical codes of the society in which it exists?
 How important is clear, straightforward communication within the context of an organization? What are some of the dangers of failing to communicate well with one’s employees and coworkers?
 How do the actions of the corporation affect the public? In what ways is corporate social responsibility reflected in the lives of employees and the general public?
 How can the core messages a corporation delivers improve the quality of life of private citizens?
 Where would the public be without corporations? What happens when the corporate constructs upon which we rely fail?
You have a great deal of freedom on this final essay; therefore, content will account for a considerable portion of your mark. The marking matrix is as follows:
Content: 30%
(Content includes [1] the complexity of the argument, [2] accuracy of your interpretation of the articles and book, [3] rhetorical force—i.e., persuasiveness—of the argument)
Grammar (including proper use of punctuation): 30%
Style: 30%
(Among other things, style includes the absence of wordiness, awkward phrasing,
excessive qualifications, excessive dependent clauses and excessive prepositional
phrases. Among other things, style includes the presence of concision, straightforward phrasing, parallelism, dominant and clear main clauses, effective use of rhetorical devices, and economy of language.)
