RAILROADS AND CRIME IN FRANCE IN 1920’S

The topic of the course in France in the interwar period. The paper topic is supposed to use Jean Renoir’s La Bete Humaine (1938) to discuss corruption and crime as depicted in media on railroads. The comparison to be made is between railroads as both a symbol of progress and rebuilding after WWI as well as symbols of crime and murder. The idea is that fears about drastic changes in society in Europe after WWI like new opinions on women, race, clothing etc were manifested in the film noir genre.
