John 6:51-66 Bread of Life Discourse/ Biblical Interpretation.

Must be in SBL Format and use provided Sources. Prospectus: Chapters 5 and 6 of John are a very interesting text that I find myself drawn back to reread. In these chapters Jesus is recorded to make some very profound statements in regard to his authority, relationship with God, and God’s relationship to man by/ through Jesus. In the latter part of chapter 6, it appears that Jesus has captivated his crowd, but has startled them with a very profound and seemingly sacrilegious statement, “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.” (John 6:54 NIV). Many of his disciples quit following him.

Questions:
I would like to research this text to discover and attempt to answer or at least propose possible conclusions to these questions;
Why was this statement a “hard teaching” to his followers?
Was Jesus purposeful in culling his disciples?
What did Jesus attempt to communicate?
Can this text be a foreshadowing event to the Lord’s supper?

Issues:
Obvious…cannibalism, drinking blood under Mosaic law, and authority to save
I have heard from several brothers that this particular text has NO relation to communion.
