Please write an informative definition paragraph (minimum 100 major words and maximum 150 words) in which you define your subject for Paper #4 Causal Argument Essay. Focus paragraph on the specific subject and begin with a formal definition. Base the development on authoritative library research, citing at least two (2) authoritative sources in your paragraph development and using formal MLA documentation for both in-text citations and a Works Cited list.
ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY: After the Works Cited list for your definition paragraph, please include an Annotated Bibliography of three (3) of the sources you are studying for the research papers (Paper #3 and/or Paper #4). See the Handbook Chapter 12 on annotated bibliographies (251). At least one of the sources will be one that you are citing specifically in the research paper, and at least one of the annotations will be one chapter (from Chapters 2-7) in the Dembo book that we are all reading for background information on the general research subject, college learning (see more details below).
Each entry for the annotated bibliography will contain a full source citation formatted according to MLA documentation strategies for Works Cited entries, as well as a brief annotation paragraph (approximately 50-75 words) that identifies, classifies, describes, summarizes, and evaluates the source. Please note that Paper #3 will have a Works Cited list for the Definition Paragraph, followed by the separate Annotated Bibliography list. The same sources may be listed on both.
Please write a persuasive essay (minimum of 500 major words or five full paragraphs and maximum 650 words) using the causal argument pattern for focus, organization, and development, including counterargument. Base the development on authoritative library research, citing at least three (3) authoritative sources in your essay development and using formal MLA documentation for both in-text citations and a Works Cited list. Again, much of the information in the Definition Paragraph (Paper #3) will be used in developing the Causal Argument Research Essay (Paper #4).
General Subject: College Learning. The general subject for both Paper #3 Definition Paragraph (with Annotated Bibliography) and Paper #4 Causal Argument Essay is COLLEGE LEARNING. Students begin with background reading on the general subject of college learning and then choose as their specific subject a significant problem or issue related to college learning, focusing on causes or consequences of the problem. The specific subject is the student’s choice, with the approval of the instructor. Students will identify and define their specific subject in the Paper #3 Definition Paragraph and then develop the subject in more depth in the Paper #4 Causal Argument Research essay.
DEMBO Book: Background Reading. As background reading for the general subject of college learning, students are assigned to read and study at least two chapters of Myron H. Dembo’s book entitled Motivation and Learning Strategies for College Success: A Self-Management Approach (any edition). We study the introductory chapter on “Academic Self-Management” together, and then students select a second chapter in the book (from chapters 2-7) to study. The Annotated Bibliography with Paper #3 will include an entry for at least one chapter from the Dembo book (one chapter from chapters 2-7). It is not required, but many students will also use one (or more) of Dembo’s chapters as source material in the Paper #3 Definition Paragraph and/or the Paper #4 Causal Argument Research essay.
PLEASE do not purchase this book. We are using library and/or online copies. Any edition is fine. We will be accessing the book together in class. Paper copies of the book are on reserve for you at the Circulation Desk of the library, and the library also has an electronic edition available through EBSCO e-books (although that edition is often difficult to access). There are also free online copies of older editions available online by searching for the following search terms—Dembo motivation pdf—or at http://samarnhpang.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/theories-in-learning.pdf.
College-Level Research. Students then do serious academic research on their specific subject, using sources from the CTC Library and other college-level resources. In Paper #3 Definition, students will cite at least two (2) authoritative sources in the definition paragraph and will include at least three sources in the Annotated Bibliography. In the Paper #4 Causal Argument Essay, students will cite at least three (3) authoritative sources specifically in the research paper.
Selecting Specific Subject. The general subject for both papers is college learning. The specific subject is a problem or issue related to college learning about which there is controversy over causes and/or consequences.
