UNACCEPTABLE TOPICS
The following topic focuses will not be accepted for Informative Speeches. Keep in mind the purpose of the Informative Speech and use the audience-centered approach and application for informing, not persuading your audience.
• Abortion (whether it is right or wrong)
• Smoking
• Drinking alcohol or driving under its influence
• Dieting/eating
• Gun control
• Sexuality

• Legalizing marijuana or other drugs
• Capital punishment
Your sources of information must be credible, respected authorities with the topic. You are to appropriately state ALL sources used to support your speech. See the instructions on choosing supporting material and stating it appropriately.
ASSIGNMENT REQUIREMENTS:
1. A typed outline must be submitted to your instructor. This is to be an outline, not a manuscript tweaked to look like an outline. You should use one of the patterns of organization for informative speaking. Use the Outline Template to correctly create your outline. Create the outline first, and then practice from it before creating your delivery notes and Power Point slides.
2. Sources – A minimum of 6 sources is required; more than 6 is fine. All sources must be cited clearly during your presentation and within the appropriate context of your speech. All sources must be listed appropriately in the outline and bibliography (see the sample outlines and the bibliography instructions in the course). At least 3 of your total sources should be credible sources that are less than 4 years old.
You will receive a deduction of points for each source short of the minimum requirement. There should be a variety of sources used. You must use at least 3 sources other than what are found on the Internet (such as an interview, magazines, newspapers, targeted survey, books, etc.) Points will be deducted for lack of variety and/or lack of credible sources. Other examples of acceptable sources of information include: the Diversity Office at SCC or your place of employment, History Channel web site, faculty, and textbooks.
Encyclopedias, Wikipedia, Twitter, blogs, tweets, etc. are not allowed as qualified sources. Use the instructions on “Choosing and Evaluating Sources” to help you identify and use the most appropriate sources.
