Smoking on Campus
Smoking is considered to be one of the problems that our surrounding deals with. The more people start smoking the more problems appear. Despite the fact that it provides negative impact on smoker`s lives, it also violates our surroundings as a great number of people don`t smoke and can`t stand this smell, but doomed to smell it every time they come in public place that refuse putting ban on smoking on their territories. For example, smoking is one of the biggest problems for young people, especially for students as most people who smoke start smoking being at school or while getting higher education. Thus, the problem that warrants my attention is smoking on campus. It is apparent that people who don`t smoke suffer from smokers` who turn healthy environment into blanket surroundings. Among non-smokers there are a lot of people who suffer from such deceases as asthma and laryngitis or bronchial allergy. Smoking harms their health and the risk to cause coughing spell and asphixy. Thus, this problem must be reduced in any case as smoking is not safe for some people. Smoking should be allowed only in special places, but not in the campuses.
Various measures should be taken in order to reduce smoking in campus. The problem might be reduced if the smoke-free environment was created. It would be possible, if colleges were allowed to place the smoking bans on their campus. Apparently, educational establishment should demonstrate all the pros of living in non-smoking surrounding. Thus, various campaigns aimed to show how smoking influence our organisms, what deceases it may cause and how it influence passive smoker, should take place almost every day as practice always makes perfect. These campaigns should be addressed to potential smokers in order to encourage them to make impact on their friends who smoke. It is necessary to motivate them to participate in the life of smokers, as not to smoke is not enough for preventing horrible deceases as breathing with this harmful smoke also may lead to grave consequences. Campuses must be totally smoke-free and smoking should be banned at all the levels beginning from the dorm rooms and up to the common living space. These measures will certainly protect non-smokers from harmful impact made by smokers.
In addition, it would be reasonable to implement the policy that would allow to reduce the tobacco industry grants, gifts, sponsorship, etc. It is apparent that smoking contributes to the deaths of millions of people all over the world. For example, in order to reduce the overall number of smokers, it is all important to provide high taxes for tobacco usage and selling.
Those who smoke in most cases have already made their choice. They know that every cigarette cuts their lives and harms their organisms. However, why those who don`t smoke and are eager to live healthy life should suffer becoming victims and potential or secondhand smokers? That is why the non-smokers is the most interesting audience. Apparently, the target audience of the given research is non-smoking students. As under the current circumstances they turn out to be second-hand smokers. Apparently, such students constitute a majority; as the majority of the population in the U.S. does not smoke. (“Colleges and Universities”) As a matter of fact, the students will be able to provide support for my project. As the crucial issues are still to be considered and carried out by the colleges stakeholders and authorities. To implement the plan and provide smoke-free environment requires a lot of money. Apparently, there might be concerns about cost. Furthermore in order, to imply the given policy, the colleges will have to refuse the financial support of the companies that are connected to the tobacco industry. Also, legal concern may arise, as there is a great deal of argument whether smoking bans in public are legal (“Frequently Asked Questions”). So, to implement this approach is not so easy. It may cause lost for tobacco industry and cause contradictions as well as violate the rights of people guaranteed by constitution. But these measures are all important as we are aimed to protect those who don`t smoke and want their organisms be strong and healthy.
However, this approach may have a lot of troubles as, in fact, the smoking share of the students might disagree with me; as in case the smoking bans are implemented, the personal freedom of the smokers will be limited. Actually, the option to design the smoking areas not to suppress the rights of either group may be suggested by them. The potential opposition may address the matter of addiction, the limit of the personal freedom, and undermining the rights of the smokers. (“Should Smoking Be Banned on All College Campuses?”). However, the plan should be implemented gradually in order to give smokers time to get accustomed to the measures that will be implemented in some time. In order to make people more aware of possible changes, it is all important to involve media and advertisement that know how exactly people`s consciousness may be influences. The world should start propagandizing healthy lifestyle before the ban will be put on smoking on campuses. This decision should not be rapid and unexpected as people will start express opposing views and protect their rights and freedom (it is commonly known that these people are free to choose). Thus, gradual implementation is the most important condition that will certainly help us to succeed.
Definitely, the multimedia medium would only contribute to the effectiveness of the delivery of the proposal. The most eye-opening might be some interesting animation devoted to the topic and the special fine art exhibition. Such a presentation could be presented as a separate event.
