Text Messaging Ruins Clear Communications Ability
English language holds high degree of usage among the users conversing and interacting in that language. It has been able to maintain its high standards for a long period, with the rules of the language being passed down from generation to generation. In fact, it is for the respect of the rules of the language that users saw it fit to preserve them in a documented form to preserve the originality and the ingenuity of the language from generation to generation, (McWhorter, 2013). It is one of the richest languages that provide meanings to various words or items depending on how it is written and spoken.
This nobility is now facing a threat of extinction from the new breed of short message service users. This group of the users of the English language does not hesitate to mutilate the language in any way they like provided their target audience gets their intended message. They violate the rules of the language with such a profound impunity that those who are not targeted with such information can barely make out the meaning of the message, (The University of Alabama Computers and Applied Technology Program, 2009). Such a coded language shortens words and uses letters or combinations thereof that sounds like the intended word to make a meaning. The language is very much common among young users, especially teenagers and college students.
The proliferation of the texting generation has raised concerns among educators who have felt that texting works to the detriment of proper language. It was observed that the rise of texting generation led to a drop in grammar scores among the students, (The University of Alabama Computers and Applied Technology Program, 2009). Some of the students got so much involved in language contraction that they virtually lost the ability to construct proper sentences and spell words correctly. The trend has deteriorated so much so that there is a general feeling among educators that something drastic has to be done to correct the situation before it hits a crisis level.
Some students who have gotten so much heavily involved in the text message mode of conversation become so much affected that they lose their ability to hold a coherent formal conversation. They have lost their ability to construct a properly structured message due to the adaptation language that compensates language phonetics with corrupted sound created by contraction. It is also contributed by the tendency of the heavy users of the texting language to resist new words as compared to users of the traditional language from the print media, (University of Calgary, 2012).
Texting has not spared its wrath on the speakers of the English language either. The contraction of the language has affected the way people speak the language due to the influence it has on the way the words are pronounced. The accent adopted by an individual borrows heavily from the spelling of the words in a sentence. Having corrupted their ability to write properly spelled words by contracting them, the speakers eventually forget how the spellings of the words ought to be. This combinatorial effect of poor spelling accentuates the reduced ability to pronounce the words correctly, (McWhorter, 2013).
The convenience of the text message also relies on its violations of the rules of the English language where the user ignores proper language structure and grammar. Continued reliance on this violation eventually leads to the reduced ability of an individual to speak properly structured phrases and sentences when holding a communication. They are deprived of style that needs to be adopted in structuring a sentence to make it sound fluent and devoid of evident flaws, (University of Calgary, 2012). It takes a great deal of vocabulary and language style to make a good speaker of the English language and many people, from academia to the media, feel that the text messaging is doing a great deal of a disservice to the young generation who are heavily dependent on the mobile technology to connect with their peers. They are slowly but steadily losing their ability to use proper language due to the unnecessary contraction of words when putting up a message for their peers, (McWhorter, 2013).
The effects of poor readership have percolated down the very basic levels of the English language usage by taking a toll on the readership of the English materials. The traditional print media, as suggested by scholars, exposes the users of the language to a rich variety of vocabulary and styles. The proliferation of the text messaging has greatly reduced the readership of the traditional materials because the users ride on the convenience afforded to them by the media to obtain information at their fingertips. They feel that it is burdensome to look for the print material from the library and extract information that they require for their exercises, (University of Calgary, 2012). The “generation text” have completely disregarded the style and rules of the language and invented their own style.
The effects of texting on an individual’s ability to read proper English are evident on their apparent inability to communicate properly because they cannot decode the written material properly because of the corruption of their language skills. Reading and writing are very closely related; therefore, what affects an individual’s ability to write definitely takes its toll on their ability to read the material as well. As a result, this generation is breeding a group of careless users of the English language by enhancing the text message usage among learners who ought to be the champions of proper language usage, (The University of Alabama Computers and Applied Technology Program, 2009).
Texting has currently been link to one of the problems that is associated with the poor writing skills of most of the current students who are going to school. There are many factors that has been associated with the problem and it mostly affect the current generation of students. Some of the factors which are attributed to be the cause of the problem are use of phones and laptops for socializing. To this end, it has been realised that the same way in which most of the young generation are chatting with their peers in the social media platform, that is the same way by which they are writing the notes or even letters which should be formal.
Social media such as Facebook, Whatsapp and twitter are some of the platforms that has negatively contributed to the problem. This is because in most cases, some of this platforms have the maximum number of words that they are required to have for instance twitter, this has always made people to write the word in short form. Moreover, lack of frequent handling of the pen on a paper by most crop of the current students have also contributed to the problem in a greater way. This is because most of the current students are using their laptops to take notes in class as opposed to the earlier generation who use to write by use of pen and paper.
Conclusion
In conclusion, texting has negatively affected the way people use grammar, writing, and speaking. The introduction of the social media is majorly attributed to be the cause of this menace. Although it has it has its positive sides, it is important that t6he teachers and institutions where the problem is experience to introduce stern measures that can help in regulating the problem.
