*I want it to use simple language some time.
Your term paper should consist of no less than 8 and no more than 10 pages of double spaced text, excluding bibliographic references, figures, and title page. Your paper must use in-text citations, following SAA format. Works cited pages are required for your bibliographic references, these pages and your title page do not count towards your total page count. A minimum of ten sources must be used.
At least four sources should be books or chapters from edited volumes and six should be from peer-reviewed journal articles. Additional book sources are acceptable in place of journal articles. Papers must have an introduction, background (reviewing the literature on your topic), discussion (critically assess what you have read on the topic), and conclusion. Papers will be assessed on the quality of sources used, thoroughness of literature review, and clarity of discussion.
Formatting:
Final papers failing to meet formatting criteria will not be accepted and will remain ungraded. Your assignment must be typed double spaced, 1″ margin, 12pt Times New Roman Font with black ink. Your final paper must have a title page that includes the paper title, your name, and date.
Grading:
25 points total. Additional points may be taken if: Paper is not at least 8 pages of double spaced text, sources used are not peer-reviewed or of academic quality as determined by the TA or instructor, the required amount of each source type is not met. Additional points will be taken for spelling or grammar if they negatively impact the ability to comprehend your paper as judged by the TA or instructor.
Point breakdown by section:
(2 pts) Introduction: Provide two or three paragraphs outlining the anthropological question or issue addressed in your paper. What are you looking at? Why is it important to consider?
(10 pts) Background: This should form the main body of your paper. Discuss the literature that you have read on the topic. What are the different perspectives on the issue you are examining? This section is an opportunity to demonstrate what you have read over the semester on your topic. Be thorough in your discussions of each source and how they inform what we know about the issue you are examining.
(5 pts) Discussion: In at least two pages, bring your own perspective based on what you have read. In what ways are the different perspectives on the issue or question your examining differ or are similar? Are there any over-arching themes in how anthropologists have approached this issue? Your discussion is not graded based on your opinions themselves, but how well you support them based on the evidence in the background sections. Provide clear, concise arguments that are supported by evidence from peer-reviewed sources.
(3 pts) Conclusion: In two or three paragraphs provide a concise summary of what you have read on your topic, your own conclusions on the material, and concluding thoughts. Do not bring new arguments into your conclusion, this should provide a concise summary of the stances taken in your readings and your own view of the topic.
(5 pts) References: Student provides proper in-text citations following the format of their selected citation style. Bibliographic entries are provided for all sources in works cited pages, following formatting for the citation style. All bibliographic entries are also cited in the text. If figures are used to illustrate points (ex. location of cultures discussed, illustrate a type of artifact), they must be referenced in text and labeled according to the citation style used.
