Personal Philosophy Presentation
Purpose: The purpose of this presentation is to provide you an opportunity to (a) present your personal philosophy of nursing, and (b) demonstrate how you plan to incorporate theory into your nursing practice.
Directions: The presentation should be an integration and culmination of your coursework (e.g., key points, theory critiques/scripts, concept analysis, class activities). The presentation is to be 8-10 minutes maximum. An APA style REFERENCE LIST should be provided to the audience.
Grading: The assignment will be graded as follows (50 total points):
I. Your background (2 min MAX) (5 points)
a. Introduced yourself
b. Defined/described yourself
c. Described how you came to be in the nursing program and why
II. Your personal definition of a nurse (1 min MAX) (10 points)
a. Provided a statement that is your answer to the question “what is a nurse?”
III. Your personal philosophy of nursing (5 min MAX) (20 points)
a. Described being a nurse
i. Identified and described the specific (a) philosophies, (b) theories, (c) classroom experiences, (d) clinical experiences, AND (e) service learning experiences that influenced your current understanding of being a nurse
IV. Your nursing practice and beyond (2 min MAX) (10 points)
a. Identified how you anticipate using theory in nursing practice
b. Described how you will use your philosophy of nursing in the nursing program
i. Identified the courses you will take in the next 10 weeks and described how your philosophy of nursing will help you in these courses
ii. Described how you will use your philosophy of nursing in the remainder of the program (after the next 10 weeks)
c. Describe how you will use your philosophy of nursing after you graduate
i. Identified the immediate impact your philosophy will have on healthcare
ii. Identified a short-term post-graduation goal (5 years or less) and how your philosophy of nursing will help you reach that goal
iii. Identified a long-term post-graduation goal and how your philosophy of nursing will help you reach that goal
V. Quality of presentation (5 points)
a. Clarity and flow
b. Demonstrated ability to understand and use conventions of language
c. Demonstrated ability to synthesize own ideas and source materials
d. Used appropriate headings/title slides in presentation
e. Stayed within guidelines (e.g. presentation length)
f. Organization, quality, and references/APA style
g. Referenced variety of sources
h. Responded to questions well
i. Incorporated coursework into presentation
j. Creativity
k. Peer feedback
