Film Analysis Report #3 – Editing

– Pink a scene from the film you have chosen to analyze, and explain whether the editor uses continuity or discontinuity editing. What are the principal characteristics of the style used by the editor.
– Is the editing smooth, natural, and unobtrusive, or is it tricky and self- conscious, calling attention to itself? Provide examples.
– Is the editing intentionally disorienting or confusing? If so, explain and provide examples.
– What is the effect of editorial cutting and transitions on the pace of the film as a whole? Provide examples.
– How does the cutting speed (which determines the average duration of each shot) correspond to the emotional tone of the scenes involved? Pick a scene in the film to use for illustrative purposes and provide examples from it.
– Does movie indicate, through editing, how the editor wants the audience to feel? Pick one scene from the film to analyze. What is the intended feeling? Do you feel it? Is it an appropriate feeling for the narrative? Why? Provide examples.
– What segments of the film seem overly long or boring? Which parts of these segments could be cut without altering the total effect? Provide examples.
– Do you discern a particular pattern of editing that runs through the entire film? If so, explain what that pattern is. Provide examples.
