Formal diagnosis of a management or organizational issue.

As with any team, there can be problems with individual contributions to team efforts. In some teams, the team carries some individuals. However, this is not acceptable in the learning environment—this is a situation that must be promptly dealt with. In the real world, the first approach is to work to correct the behavior of the nonperformer. If this fails, then the project manager may be able to fire the nonperformer, or get a substitute representative from a matrix functional organization. In this course, we will follow a similar approach. Obviously, this will be of concern to the team if one of the members is not providing the necessary input for an acceptable grade.

If you have a team member who is not performing, the team needs to attempt to solve the problem. If these attempts are unsuccessful, the team may “fire” a nonperforming member. The decision by the team to fire an individual is final and cannot be appealed. The team must notify the instructor of its decision. This notification, via the team’s Group Page area on the Blackboard, must include a statement of circumstances, actions taken to solve the problem, and the results of these actions on the individual’s performance. A fired team member shall not be replaced, and their peer review will reflect this decision to fire them and subsequently, they will lose many points on the project.

The fired team member has the option of attempting to get another team to “hire” them or to complete all remaining team assignments on their own. This would include, among other requirements, the creation of an individual final project plan and presentation.

In this course, you must demonstrate that you have gained, or enhanced, the skills necessary to work in a team. The “firing” of a team member shall be a rare event, but it is a team decision that is endorsed by the instructor.

Please make note that ALL team members must participate in the completion of this assignment. To that end, if other team members or the instructor have demonstrable evidence that a team member did not contribute to a particular assignment, that team member will receive zero (0) points for that work on the peer evaluation. In addition, there will be NO make-up work opportunity for that assignment.

In the Group Project, each small group will conduct a formal diagnosis of a management or organizational issue. As part of your small group, each project team has the responsibility of assessing the organization presented in the case study on Global Mobile Corporation on page 636 of your text book. Your task is to diagnose the current problem and analyze the change that the organization has just undergone. Ensure that you describe the present level of effectiveness and the interventions needed to improve its functioning. Present your results, and provide a written report that describes the analysis of a problem and a detailed description of the recommendations for addressing the problem.

You will work together to analyze the case and prepare a presentation that includes the following:

•Description of the area of focus for the project (e.g., department, division)

•Description of the organization (e.g., mission, objectives, structure)

•Identify the key problem(s) facing the organization, and describe the preliminary problems or issues of concern your team identified in the case study.

•Specify the preliminary root causes for the identified problem(s) or issue(s) of concern.

•Describe your team’s assessment and feedback plan to confirm your diagnosis. Your plan should include a description of the diagnostic model and methods your team would use to conduct the diagnosis.

•Make specific recommendations for interventions that the organization should implement or the OD best practices your team would follow if you were hired on as consultants on this case. These best practices will have emerged from the previous summaries and discussions in the course but can also come from assigned course readings, outside readings, and students’ own organizational experiences.

•A timeline for completing the project (e.g., planning, data collection, data analysis, writing of the report, etc.)
