Module Assessment Components
In the following pages, further details of each assessment component are presented alone with expectations in relation to prior preparation and completion.
Assignment 1
• Each student is required to write a short report about a project in which they were involved in the past, or currently involved. Your role in the project could have been as a project team member, project manager or end customer. This project may be from work or personal experience.
• The report should briefly introduce the nature of the project – the industry sector, size of the project team, the purpose or goal of the project, how long it lasted and approximate budget.
• The main focus of your report should be to reflect and evaluate on how well the project was done. Use the following questions to help you reflect and evaluate the project: Was there a good project manager? How did the project team work? What problems occurred during the project and how were these resolved? What worked well during the project? Were there many changes made during the project? Other than project management, what other business skills were required during the project (e.g. negotiation, finance, purchasing, human resources, legal, cultural….)?
• The purpose of Assignment 1 is to get each student to reflect on the challenges of managing projects in the global business environment and to evaluate how well a project was done. Assignment 1 will also enable students to share an example of a project with the rest of the class, as well as providing them with a basis to apply the theory from the various topics as the module progresses.
• Assignment 1 should contain a minimum of 900 words and a maximum of 1,000 words. Students may find the readings from Topic 1 of particular assistance in preparing this assignment (Chapter 1 Text, Randolf & Posner (1998) and “A Day in the Life” Case)
• In addition to submitting a hard copy of this assignment to the Programme Office and uploading to Blackboard, each student should bring a second copy of the assignment to the sessions so that they can talk about it and refer to it during the module topics
