Write a 3 page critical review of major themes from this contemporary study of relations between the United States and Mexico, especially pertaining to migration from Mexico to the United States.
I have selected this book for our course for several reasons:
? The topic of the book is of great importance to all Mexicans and Americans, and is a valuable effort to present a factual study of how migration has changed both Mexico and the United States in the past, the present, and the future.
? Professor Castaneda is an acknowledged specialist on U.S.-Mexican relations, having taught at universities in both the United States and Mexico. He is both the son of a Foreign Minister of Mexico and he himself served as Mexico’s Foreign Minister – Ministro de Relaciones Exteriores – from 2000-2003 in one of the most significant moments in Mexico’s political history, the administration of President Vicente Fox. Currently he is a professor at New York University.
? The author’s goal in writing this book is to provide an alternative to the heated and often historically ignorant debate on immigration – in both countries.
In reading this book I expect that each one of you will find a section or sections that are of greater interest than others, but please give all chapters your time and attention.
How should you read this book? Well, as quickly as possible (use your skimming tools!).
Please be aware of the fact that Professor Castaneda is not simply manufacturing this information, but is also presenting data compiled by other respected scholars in this field of study, as well as based upon his own experiences.
Before you read each chapter, ask yourself:
? What is Professor Castaneda’s main argument or arguments in this chapter, and how does he support it? Take notes during or after your reading, so that you can participate in the class discussion board and also present a good critical review of the book.
When you prepare your essay/review, do not just conceive of this as a review for this class, but also as a contribution to the national debate on these issues.
Format:
? Double spaced, 1 inch margins, 12 point type, name on the first page, saved as a Word document.
