career plan

Project:                                Personal Career Plan

In this assignment, you are instructed to build a personal career plan.

This assignment will look different for each of you.  Some of you are young and just beginning your career path (there may be some of you who are still not quite sure what your wish to do), some of you are looking for a way to further your career and some of you are looking to make a career change.    I have given a general outline below to follow but I encourage you to carefully look at your individual situation and elaborate.

This is a great project no matter where you are in your life.  My husband and I have recently prepared a five year plan toward retirement.  We call it our “map”.  It helps to write it down.  It keeps you focused on your goals.  I challenge you to seriously consider your goals, carefully map your path, and use this as a tool as you are moving forward.    Then use this plan.  Consider this a “business plan” for your life.

You may include input from spouse, significant other, children, parents, etc. in this project.

Make this paper very individualized since your goals should be very individualized.  This outline is only a guide – do not just answer the questions and submit.  Carefully think through this project.  If you have questions be sure to ask.

Length:  5-7 pages including resume. 1 inch margins, 12 pt. font.  You must cite any references that you use (I don’t care what style you use to cite, just make sure that you credit wherever you found the information.)

GENERAL OUTLINE

Part I:    Title Page –

Include: Name, Management 103

Part II:   Outline your personal career ideals for the next five years.  Be sure to include your goal(s).

Part III:                 Situation Analysis

What are the general economic conditions of the region where you wish to work?

What is the overall outlook for major job/career categories?

Who are your potential employers?

What do your potential employers look for in new employees?

Do you want to work for yourself and what would that plan look like?

Part III: Personal Assessment

Review personal goals, objectives and performance.

  1. Three key strengths
    1. How do these strengths allow you to meet the needs of your potential goals?
    2. How do these strengths compare to those of your peers/competitors?
    3. Do these strengths give you an advantage relative to your peers/competitors?

  1. Three key weaknesses.
    1. How do these weaknesses cause you to fall short of meeting the needs of your potential employers?
    2. How do these weaknesses compare to those of your peers/competitors?

  1. Career/business opportunities.
  2. Career/business threats.
  3. Experience and Expertise
  4. Obstacles

Part IV: Summary

Put together a timeline for the next five years of the steps you will take from today until you can meet your goals.  Remember that steps may change and in fact, your goals could change but work from today and consider where you want to be and put that plan on paper.

Part V:  Resume

The final part of this assignment is a top quality (1) page resume.  You do not need to have a cover letter – just a resume.  It should not exceed 1 page – my experience/qualifications are fairly lengthy after 30 years of professional work and I can write a 1 page professional resume for myself so I don’t want to get a 2 page resume with an explanation that you couldn’t fit it all on 1 page.  When you apply for positions, probably 500 other people have applied also so you want the potential employer to be able to scan yours quickly.

Be careful that your resume is entirely correct.  One of the first things that make an employer toss a resume/application is a typo or grammatical error.  Be certain that it is attractive, easy to read, correct, and clearly/honestly details you.

Here are some info that might help you do this order.
