Length should be 870 words minimum not including heading or bibliog., using 14 font; no penalty for more than 2 pgs.
Being sensitive to cultural differences in our global society is imperative. This class provides a forum for cultural interactions. A means of generating cultural understanding is to begin by learning more about your own ethnicity, religion, or other culture group of which you are a part.
This paper is designed to allow you, as a member of possibly many cultures, co-cultures, and social groups, an opportunity to examine how ONE of your own cultural communities affects your social identities, personal beliefs, values, and norms and the ways you communicate with others. While you may need to do some research about your culture, this is not a Wikipedia-style paper but rather a personal one about how aspects of your culture have made you the person you are today.
Tie your findings with your choice of 3-5 course ideas and quotes from a variety of COURSE MATERIAL from Chapters: 1, 3, 4 & Modules: 1 & 2. Do not use just one class source or one term/word (i.e. “emic”) without defining it and explaining how it fits your culture and is defined by Hall, et.al.
Put these class concepts in bold with author/page # & author/module #’s i.e. (Hall, 24) (Josselyn, Mod. 2), or some other source from mod’s 1 & 2 in parentheses after each aspect of course material you use within the paper. (All in bold)
For the bibliography (required for all papers), use either the APA or MLA format when citing our text & modules and any outside sources (optional). You need to include Hall & Josselyn in a bibliog. at the end of your paper because they have written other texts, there are other authors by the name of Hall, etc., you may have cited other sources from the modules, or you may have interviewed relatives, etc. To quote anyone without citing the source is plagiarism. No other sources required unless some research is needed. Sample citations are in Module 9.
Your paper will be evaluated based on your level of insight, demonstrated understanding of course terminology, and the quality of your writing.
Further details are below.
You are not restricted to race or ethnicity. You could research and write about your religious background, be it Jewish, Christian, Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist, etc. or your culture group such as gypsy, gay, lesbian, transgender, hippie, Goth, rocker, “Deadhead,” or generational: baby boomers, gen’s X, Y, “millennials,” etc. or even what part of the USA you’re from.
Family heritage
An option for this assignment would be to explore an aspect of family culture. Whether you or your forebears are originally from Asia, Africa, Latin America, Europe, India, Australia, the Pacific Islands, North America, or some combination thereof, you have a fascinating heritage to share about the literature, dance, religion, festivals, rituals, traditions, or historical events of the country of your birth or the birth of your ancestors. The possibilities are endless so keep the paper focused and well organized around how specific aspects of your native culture have molded you..
If you are a third or fourth generation American, take this opportunity to learn more about your family’s cultural history by interviewing a grandparent or great uncle or aunt. Prepare some questions in advance and video or audiotape the interaction if you can, so you will have an “oral” history. More than likely, your relatives will be very pleased to know you are interested in learning more about your family background and will be glad you asked. The conversation may even help bring you closer together.
If relatives live far from you, use this “research” assignment as an opportunity to reconnect. The interview can be conducted by phone, email, text, videoconferencing, etc. Whether or not you are native to the United States, don’t hesitate learn about your ethnic heritage from a first-hand perspective.
In any case, be careful of “information overload.” It’s understandable to want to share everything about your culture, but it’s better to focus in on three main topics, i.e. traditions, clothing, or music and expand on those and how they have impacted you, or choose three points under one of those categories. Your can add interest to your culture paper with visual or audio aids such as pictures, power point, icons, and musical selections sent in a PM to me via member listing in DPM, IF unable to attach to your paper here in ATS as it is to be submitted inline, e.g. not as an attachment.
Comments from Support Team: You may keep the word count as 550 words.
