UNIT #2 Argumentative Synthesis Essay You will select two essays from our class readings and at minimum five outside resources and evaluate their arguments in relation to one another. Your evaluation should consider the following questions: 1. To what extent are these works participating in the same conversation? 2. And, how, based on their respective positions, can we develop an overarching conclusion that charts a way forward? In order to answer these questions successfully, you must learn to abstract connections between simple sources and explain, through analysis and close reading, their relevance to one another. Your response should move beyond obvious conclusions. There are a variety of ways to accomplish this task, but perhaps the easiest way to do so is to name the general problem that each essay addresses and explore why a common solution to this problem has not yet been developed. Affirm the complexity of the problem that multiple writers have named. Your essay will not appeal to or replicate popular opinion. Instead, you are attempting to produce insightful, scholarly perspective by confronting the difficulty of naming and solving a relevant social problem. It is also important that your essay is critical, which does not mean it will adopt a negative tone. Rather, a critical synthesis can support multiple writers’ arguments, but should do so in a manner that extends your implications with insight and innovation. It is crucial to understand that an argument does not replicate an existing perspective but attempts to invent an idea that shapes attitudes in new ways.
