Assignment: Black Like Me Write a 5-10 page paper using size 12 font, double-spaced with 1” margins. Start the paper one-quarter of the way down the 1st pg, and do not put the page number on the first page. Provide a bibliography with a 10-point automatic deduction if there is not one. Be sure to provide an introductory and closing paragraph. Write the paper using headings to distinguish the answers between questions. For example: 1. Present & reference information gathered while watching Slavery By Another Name 2. Explain in 3-4 paragraphs the reality of African-American people in the US at the time of Griffin’s experiment. What were the laws in place that limited or forbid mobility or behavior? Provide 3 examples. Also, provide 3 unwritten laws/rules that were obeyed by black people other than not to look at a white woman. Why did African-Americans/black people obey an unwritten law/rule? Note, general info available on the internet will be accepted, however there must be detail to the answers. More specific answers that aren’t the run-of-the-mill internet answers will be seen as a more comprehensive answer. 3. Present ONE court case from the 1950’s-1960’s Civil Rights Movement era and explain generally why the case was filed, the result and how you believe the case has helped (or hindered) civil rights for African Americans. Then compare/contrast to a discriminatory case of any type (race, sex, gender, sexual orientation, age) that has been in the courts in the past 5 years. How are the cases similar, how are they different? In your opinion, based on the comparison of the cases have we made progress since the Civil Rights Movement? (Be sure to cite your sources in Citation Page). 4. Provide an itinerary of each place Griffin visited with a description of his experiences that is 2-3 sentences long. This section should be single-spaced with ONE space between each place listed. The font when providing material that is successive and within a particular topic or question can be made smaller. For example: • This people went to the store to buy groceries. They came home and put them away, ate dinner and watched 9 movies. Afterwards they went to sleep for 3 days and then got up and went to work. They had a lot of energy and must drive 99 miles in each direction. A. When the people come home they are tired and fall onto the couch or chairs to nap, but awaken and are very hungry such that their stomachs are grumbling. At the end of the evening every Sunday the whole family opens a package of Double Stuff Oreo’s and eats the entire thing. 5. Consider your experience viewing A Class Divided. Explain how the lessons learned in the film may influence the perceptions and behaviors of both white and black people within the book. Use 5 examples from the book to illustrate your points. Consider differences in class lessons and education, social interaction and perception of others, instructions given that are limiting or may not make sense, and consequences. 6. In regard to the issue of work, i.e. employment, explain the realities of various experiences & observations within the book. Research jobs available to African-Americans/black people in the 1950’s. Give 5 examples. What prevented employment in higher positions if the person of color was qualified? Also, how similar or different are the experiences today in gaining employment in general based on your experiences and/or observations? (If you are not a person of color your observations or experiences in the workplace can be presented)
