A note on writing good essays
The essay questions in this course are related to major debates in the academic literature on international news. Your job is to tease out the underlying conflict of ideas, and present an argument that support one answer or interpretation of the issue over others. The best essays will draw on a variety of books, articles and research, to provide evidence for their essays argument. They will present this logically and clearly using a polished writing style, and the appropriate referencing and layout for an advanced university essay.

Some Common Mistakes
1)Essays that do not present a clear argument. Towards the start of your essay (in the 1st or 2nd para), state what your essays argument/interpretation of the topic will be. Then stay on topic throughout!
2) Putting too much description and not enough argument/analysis in the essay. Dont get sidetracked explaining a time in history/event etc. What is your argument? Use your essay to convince the reader that your interpretation is correct.
3) Failing to reference sources appropriately. See the reference guide (posted on Moodle). Make sure your in-text references, and your bibliography is correctly set out.
