- Introduction:
The main purpose of this assignment is to give us a better understanding on sporting facility. This report will give explanation about how a sporting facility is managed and how a stadium can be use as a multi functional venue. Moreover, so not only a stadium can be use to host sporting events, it can also be use for other events such as, music concerts and school graduation ceremony. This assignment requires us to build our own brand new stadium in a country, in this case Indonesia. To be successful in building a new stadium, every details have be perfect in order to attract huge numbers of patrons.
- Body of the Report:
Sporting stadium is one of the biggest public spaces that we as human builds. Many of the ideas and features that we see today in sporting stadiums, mainly originate from U.S.A and Europe. When we look at stadiums all around the world, we automatically think about the sport that it holds, sports such as soccer, basketball, tennis, etc. What we don’t really realize is that, sporting facilities can sometimes hold other different events as well, many of today’s stadiums all over the world serve as a multipurpose facility. In Indonesia, more specifically Jakarta, there are not many stadiums that it can be proud of. The biggest and arguably best stadium in Jakarta is Gelora Bung Karno, Also known as GBK. It is a multipurpose facility that mainly use for soccer events with the capacity of 80000 seats. The quality of the stadium is adequate when looking at its service, pitch quality, security, seat quality, etc. Sport fans in Jakarta have been demanding to have a new and better stadium. So, this is the detailed guideline about a new stadium that’s going to be built in the future.
2.1 Location:
The first and one of the most important factors that is essential to build a stadium is its location. Jakarta is one of the most congested city in the world and it appears that there is not enough land to build a new stadium. So, the best possible solution is to build a stadium that is just outside of the CBD to avoid traffic and disturbance to the community while building the stadium. Alam Sutera is a decent location to build a new stadium, it is located 15km from Jakarta and can be easily access from the freeway and is only 20 minutes from CBD. There is a massive development at the moment in Alam Sutera making it the up and coming neighborhood just outside of Jakarta. With huge percentage of the land in Alam Sutera has not been use, making it more ideal to build a stadium. The suburb consists of two different areas residential and commercial with the two areas are not far apart. To locate the stadium in the middle of a developing suburb will only help them further into their development.
2.2 Capacity and Use of the Stadium:
This stadium will feature 90,000 seats making it one of the biggest sporting facilities in the world. This stadium will offer soccer team from Jakarta, Persija Jakarta to be specific, as its home stadium. Persija Jakarta is a well-known football club in Indonesia that always sits on the top half table of the Indonesian Super League. By making this stadium as its home, it will create at least 25 home games to be played in the sport facility in within a year. As of right now, the home stadium of Persija Jakarta is located in GBK. In addition, this stadium can also attract the Indonesian national team whenever the team hosts a soccer match. The facility will not only host soccer event, it will also be a multipurpose facility that can be use for music concerts and other type of event that will generate added revenue to the site.
2.3 Designs and Technology of the Facility:
Looking at the design of different stadiums all over the world, it seems that newly built stadium has a futuristic looks that is really appealing to the eyes of the people around. So, not only the stadium will attract sport fans, it can also be a tourist attraction. There are several elements that needed to be taken care of when building a new stadium.
First of all, the selection of the football turf that best suited to the climate in Indonesia. Artificial turf is becoming more and more common these days in the football world. According to Joseph S Blatter, the president of FIFA, “the newest generation of artificial turf has proven to be the most favorable for football to date” (Blatter., 2011). Although the installation of artificial turf is more expensive, the cost of maintenance will be less than an actual grass. Furthermore, the artificial turf comes with the line marking and also the free draining system will only make it more desirable. The addition of retractable turf technology will give an added versatility to the venue for other different event that can be held in the stadium.
In Indonesia, soccer fans are truly enthusiast about their team, sometimes they get too excited that cause chaos. To solve this issue, the stadium needs to build fences that can eliminate this matter. The lighting around the stadium is also a critical factor in building a new stadium. Lighting system directed to the football turf has to be in the highest quality to cater the needs of players and spectators view when games are played during night times.
The seats in the facility need to be looked at closely because the comfort of spectators is very important to the stadium management. “it is of great importance to understand what the customer thinks about service quality offered by the organization” (Rust and Oliver, 1994).To minimize cost of installing seats in the stadium, recycled plastic can be use to create these seats. The use of recycled item is a symbol of going green. The other factors that required attention is the spacing of each seats, it is preferable that each seats is not too close and not too far apart so that each supporter feels comfortable when sitting in their seats. The facility will be better off using folding stadium seats, as it will be easier for the cleaning process.
It will be a good addition to the stadium to have HDTV hanging on the top of the stadium, this will allow spectators to have a look at goals replay or critical moment of the game. The screen will also provide spectators with seats located far-off from the pitch to have a clearer view of the game whilst still getting the live atmosphere. This screen can also be use for halftime entertainment such as highlights, sporting bloopers, advertisement etc. Not only it can be use for sporting reason, this screen will also be useful for music concerts and other sort of events.
The roofing of the stadium is another thing that needs to be taken care of. The best roofing system that needs to be installed would be a retractable roof, this will allow activities to be continue in extreme weather condition. However, the cost will be very expensive. Last but not least, the exterior of the stadium, a luminous exterior is preferred so that the stadium will look appealing to the eyes of patrons. A similar exterior concept has been made, for instance Allianz Arena in Germany and Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. This concept will easily attract tourist who visit Jakarta, because the exterior lighting is just breathtaking to be seen.
With the technology that is implied in the stadium, hopefully one day Indonesia will host a big sporting event, such as the Olympics.
2.4 Facilities in the Stadium
The facility within or outside the facility is critical to the success of the facility. The major issue that needed to be closely monitored is the parking spaces that are available to visitors. A multi level parking space will be included in the facility and more outside the stadium for more visitors. A priority will be given to those who have VIP passes or person with disabilities. In Indonesia public transport is known to be very dangerous, and that’s the reason for the stadium to have a multiple parking spaces, as the majority of the people will drive their own car or motorcycles to get there. However, there will still be bus stops around or close to the stadium for whoever uses public transport. By building stadiums, a lot of jobs will be created through the existence of restaurants, café, merchandise stall, etc. The studies showed that Sidney Olympic games in 2000 created 5300 jobs in south Walzder-Australia and 7500 jobs throughout Australia (Lockstone and Baum, 2008). A number of toilets will also be present around the gate of the entrance to the stadium. Women and disabled toilet will appear more in the facilities as they spend more time in the toilet than regular men does. In every entrance to the stadium there will be enough security to ensure the safety of the patrons. Safety procedure will be present in the facility as well, safety procedure such as emergency exits, CCTV, ambulance etc. Looking through a financial perspective, the success of activities carried out by sports organizations is closely associated with the quality of services offered to customers and making sure customers get highest level of satisfaction from such services (Kotler, 2000)
2.5 Budgets and Finance:
Building a stadium in Indonesia usually will be finance by the Indonesian government. Building a new stadium will cost a huge sum of money when looking at the cost of the land, site preparation, construction and many more. However, the government will have to look at the advantages of building a new stadium. Such a project will help them meet its social and cultural obligations to the local community. By possessing a stadium, the revenue it creates will be huge. Revenue can be gain through a lot of ways, for instance ticket sales, sponsorship, parking fees, stadium naming rights. It will also provide the government with economic stimulus such as tourism and external investment. If one day, Jakarta would host huge sporting event like the Olympics, it will generate big sum of revenue to the country. “Olympic games is seen as a unique opportunity for local marketing, because a potential economic advantage of being the host of a big sport event is to attract many spectators and tourists to the hosting city and consequently, it shall bring positive economic consequences” (Preuss et al., 2007).
- Conclusion:
All in all, building a new stadium is not an easy task. There are a lot of different factors and aspects that needed to be considered in order to have a successful sporting facility. Every detail in building a new stadium will have a direct impact on its performance. If this stadium is build in Jakarta, it simply will be a masterpiece and people will have an unforgettable moment experiencing it.
