Answer prompt A or B, but not both.
Prompt A: The First Wave
Compare and contrast two first wave ethnic groups: Chinese, Pacific Islanders, Japanese, Korean, Asian Indian, or Filipino. Answer the following in your essay:
What were push factors for emigration? Pull factors for immigration to the US?
What were common jobs for these groups and how did they differ or were they similar for the two groups you’re comparing?
What were some laws that shaped their experience in the US?
How did the two groups resist the discrimination they experienced? (For example, striking for better work conditions, challenging a law, subversive resistance at the work place, interracial marriage, etc.)
Analyze the importance of this history and whether it should be considered a part of American history.
Prompt B: Japanese Mass Incarceration
Explain Executive Order 9066 and how it impacted the Japanese American community during WWII. Describe the treatment of Japanese Americans as prisoners in the internment camps, and finally analyze 1-2 examples of Japanese Americans resisting this treatment. Why is it important to learn about their resistance as well as their treatment during this time?
