in 2002 from 31st May to 30th June the seventeenth World Cup were holed by South Korea and Japan, during 31 days, there were only 800 athletes in South Korea, 10 thousand journalists , 16 thousand after moving staff and tens of thousands of fans; in 2005 Aichi World Expo Japan was originally expected 15 million visitors, but the actual number of visitors reached 22 million, the original estimate does not exceed a maximum of 200 thousand per day, but in fact the number of single day visit up to 280 thousand . The crowd has become a common phenomenon in large-scale social event.

There a good example of crowd management : The opening of Terminal 5 (T5) at Heathrow Airport on 27th March 2008.

Having reviewed the evidence detailed in the report, along with the sparse

literature available, we believe the key factors which contributed to the

debacle are: –

o Technology and software failures

o Inefficient staff training and familiarization

o Lack of new system testing

o Staff delays

o Incomplete building

o Lack of end-user involvement

o Inflexible management style

o Poor industrial relations

o Failure to learn lessons

o Lack of a systems approach

 

However technology also plays a part in achieving successful crowd management. According to the official House of Commons Transport Committee report, a

whole range of problems and failures with the new technology and software

systems occurred on the opening day of T5, including: –

o Problems with wireless internet connections.

o Software interface problems.

o Systems not being reset following testing.

o Problems with the work allocation devices

o Difficulties with staff being able to log-in to the baggage system, due to

passwords being incorrectly generated and inputted into the system.

 However, the greatest problem was probably that experienced with the

baggage handling system, which failed to perform as it should have done.

 

 

2000 (July) Roskilde Festival, Denmark. 26 people injured and 9 died at a concert (Pearl Jam) when crowds slip and fall in mud at front of stage. The crowd brings a lot of opportunity of business but also a big chance of accident .

  4. A collapse of a structure and fall in the crowd
  5. Weather
  6. Terrorist attack.

 

There are some ways to improve the customer’s experiences and maintain expectations

  • First of all , make a risk assessment sheet and handle it to the staff to check. So it is more unlikely to meet a accident .
  • A group of well trained staff staff is important. All of the staff should be intimately aware of the security policies and know what to do when any accident happened.They should also have well known of CPR and first-aid.
  • Set up signs every where to warn people
  • Set up a team to dealing with the complains and take the suggestions
