I already ordered before this essay, but i want you to do again… the essay should have examples and counterexamples to what Bordo takes to be traditional gender ideologies. and this time, i give you two ads what you analysis.
and here is guide again.
In her essay “Hunger as Ideology,” Susan Bordo discusses the ways in which advertisements shape our ideas about gender. In other words, she claims that advertisements give us ideas about how men and women should look, act, or feel. They tell us what is sufficiently “manly” or appropriately “feminine.” We know, however, that gender roles and social attitudes are always evolving and have changed greatly over the past few decades. It is not uncommon now to see the media portray women in positions of power or men as stay-at-home dads. Bordo argues, though, that even images that “appear to violate traditional gender-dualities” still fall back on traditional notions of separate gender roles and reinforce traditionally limiting ideas of what men and women should be like.
In this assignment, I ask that you take up Bordo’s challenge to analyze advertisements and discover the messages about gender performance that get “sold” along with the product.
You will need to choose 2 ads to analyze. You might want to find ads that represent women and men engaged in similar activities or selling similar kinds of products, though your ads do not need to reference both genders. Bordo focuses on food and eating, but you might choose to focus on ads for cars, pharmaceuticals, cleaning products, technology, perfumes/cologne, etc. Find examples and counterexamples to what Bordo takes to be traditional gender ideologies. Choose your ads carefully with attention to specific details and keep in mind that you must be able to formulate a strong thesis about them. I suggest that you look at many ads, but, as mentioned before, you’ll probably only want to focus on 2 ads due to the length of your essay.
Helpful Hints
Clearly and explicitly describe your ads so that your reader can “read” the images as you do.
Use Notice and Focus and The Method to notice details and patterns in your ads.
Do not consider the effectiveness of the ad in relation to the product. You are analyzing how these ads construct ideas about gender. You are not writing an analysis of marketing techniques.
Go beyond pointing out what you see and consider the significance of your interpretations.
The best essays will also consider the larger social implications of the ads.
How do they influence our thinking about ourselves and our culture as a whole?
