1. Both Hobbes and Rousseau claim that the power of the sovereign is indivisible. And yet, these two political thinkers have very different ideas in mind. How do they differ? And which, in your opinion, is the better view? Answer both questions in a concise but compelling argument, and offer quotes and examples to support your claims.
Helpful sections: Book II, Ch. 2 from Rousseau’s Social Contract; “These Rights are Indivisible” from Hobbes’ Leviathan. Please note that these sections should constitute a starting point. You will need the rest of the texts to understand the arguments Rousseau and Hobbes make in regard to the indivisibility of the sovereign.
