Title: Something other than Mini-Essay 1
Content: During the second Discussion Activity, we discussed how musicians of the Baroque Era manipulated the elements of music in musical pieces to suggest a particular emotion or affect to listeners, a practice often referred to as the Doctrine of Affections.
A. For the second Mini Essay, listen to the aria Rejoice Greatly from Handels oratorio, Messiah. Recognizing that the arias text is a starting point for both Handel and the listener, what type of affect does Handels aria convey? What are two musical features (uses of elements) that you believe Handel employs to achieve this affect?

B. As we have discussed in class, Baroque music often achieved its affects through theatrical extravagance, and splendor was a big part of its appeal. What is one feature of Rejoice Greatly that seems overtly theatrical? Do you believe that this theatricality enhances or diminishes our responses to pieces like Rejoice Greatly today? Please briefly explain your answer.

Grading: Papers will be graded according to the following:
5 pts Spelling, punctuation, grammar, etc. (Please write in your best style!)
10 pts A Two features contributing to affect (answer all questions posed)
10 pts B Theatrical feature and response today (answer all questions posed)
25 pts.

Papers will be graded and returned via the web site.
