Current Issues in Criminal Justice
Community Corrective Program was established to provide the crime offender with services and supervision after serving their terms (Sechrest, 1979). The programs primary objective is to assist the offenders to lead a better life by reducing chances of them committing other crimes or continuing with criminal behaviours. The facilities assist in improving safety in the community and reducing overcrowding in prisons. There are several programs that are facilitated here for example Rehabilitation programs, Restraint programs, Sex Offenders Education Programs among others (Martin, 1981).
Rehabilitation program is dedicated to providing offenders with the chance to lead productive and successful lives through cognitive changes (Sechrest, 1979). The program foresees that the offender does not commit the crimes in the future.
Restraint program is through supervision and surveillance of offenders in the society with the objective of reduces their probability of engaging in criminal activities again (Pearson, 1987).
Sex Offender Education Program aims at increasing awareness on sexual assaults, recognizing how the victims are affected and making the offenders take responsibility of their act (Sechrest, 1979). The offenders are convinced to admit their offenses through lectures and counseling that have transformed them into being morally upright.
Although, the above programs are administered independently, but the combination of two or more proves to be more effective. A combination of Restraint and Rehabilitation is appropriate in insuring that offenders are changed, such that chances of crime involvement in future are reduced (Pearson, 1987).
By combining the two, it will be mandatory for the offenders to take steps into positive change and will be in the program for long enough until they are changed (Boudouris, 1985). It will include an intensive and implemented program that is treatment oriented while supervising the offender’s progress (Sechrest, 1979). In the end the offender not only positively changes, but also gains knowledge on economic empowerment projects that will be a source of income to them after they are released from prison (Martin, 1981).
