Assignment Question

A case study is an in-depth study of one person, group, or event. In a case study, nearly every aspect of the subject’s history is analyzed to seek patterns and causes of behavior. Case studies can be used in a variety of fields including psychology, medicine, education, anthropology, sociology, criminology, political science, and social work. This assignment is a desktop case study and students are not required to perform original research. Students are to use research available online, focusing on scholarly, peer- reviewed sources and/or valid academic references. (the section on References provides additional detail). Students are to choose from cases of state or state-corporate crime provided in CANVAS Files.

(Note: If you choose a case of state or state-corporate crime, be advised that the lectures and/or powerpoints are meant to be an overview and do not provide sufficient detail. You will need to find scholarly, peer-reviewed references and other credible references.)

The case study should have five main sections: 1. Introduction 2. Background 3. Presentation of Findings 4. Analysis/Discussion 5. Conclusion

The Introduction: The introduction should inform the reader of the topic or case and set the stage for the study. It should clearly state the paper’s goals. After reading the introduction, any reader should be able to understand what the case study is about and why it is important. The introduction does not have to be lengthy. 5-8 sentences should suffice.

The Background: The background should explain the particulars of the case in question. Your sources should provide ample background information on the specifics of the case in question. How long should the background be? Use your best judgment. Provide any reader what you feel to be the right amount of information about the case before going in to detail in the next section of your paper.

The Presentation of Findings: The presentation of findings should clearly discuss and explain the results your research. All aspects of the case should be presented. Lay out the relevant details and mention the most important point, to include the nature of the crime or crimes committed, the perpetrator/s involved, victim issues, and prosecution/litigation outcomes, if any. Data from sources should be properly cited in APA format and should be summarized as Analysis and Discussion Relate the case to specific concepts you have learned from the textbook and from the course. The Integrated Theory of Supranational Crimes should be part of the analytic framework. Discuss any particularly striking or illuminating issues about or case, or from any of research sources that you used. Discuss the broader implications of the case. You could also discuss alternative courses of action, or even possible solutions to discourage future offending. Conclusion Synthesize, don’t summarize. Include a brief summary of the paper’s main points, but don’t simply repeat things that were in your paper. Instead, show your reader how the points you made and the sources you used fit together. Pull it all together. What can be learned from the case? Depending on the case, it may be appropriate to mention why this case is important to the study of state crime, or why it is important that the general population have knowledge of this case. Format and requirements : 1. This paper must be typed and double-spaced AND must be at least 8 pages long. (Minimum 8 full pages). The title page and references page do not count toward the minimum 8 page requirement. 2. Standard one-inch top and bottom margins, and 12pt-font size Times New Roman must be used. 3. Paper must be written in the third person. 4. Each paper must use a minimum of 5 schorlarly, peer-reviewed references. There is no limit to the number of academi references used, however, at least 5 must be scholarly, peer-reviewed. The course textbook is a scholarly, peer- reviewed source and can be used as needed and will count toward the 5 required. Additional reference information is provided in a later section of this syllabus. 5. This is a 300 level course and the use of Intro level textbooks is discouraged. Intro level textbooks are not designed to provide in-depth information about criminal cases. 6. Each writing assignment must be written using the American Psychological Association (APA) guidelines for papers, in-text citations, and formatting the Upload the paper as a MS Word document. Papers will go through Turnitin.com for plagiarism check. Results of the Turnitin.com check will be readily available to students. Due by 11:59 pm, Nov 20, 2023.

PENALTY FOR LATE SUBMISSION: This applies to ALL Writing Assignments. For papers submitted up to 48 hours late, 10 points will be deducted from the grade obtained on the assignment. REFERENCES REQUIREMENTS 1) References may consist of books or scholarly, peer-reviewed journal articles. A a minimum of 5 peer-reviewed, scholarly references must be used. (5 is the bare minimum and may not be sufficient for your needs; use as many references as you deem necessary) a. You may use additional references as necessary. Newspapers, news magazines, government websites, and so forth are acceptable references but do not count as scholarly, peer-reviewed sources. 2) Cite references to substantiate or justify your statements. You must always cite references in the text of your paper whenever you use somebody’s ideas or argument, even if you paraphrase. 3) You may use the course textbook as one of your references, however, use it sparingly. Building your paper around the course textbook defeats the purpose of the assignment. 4) A reference page is required, listing all sources cited.
