Reading the following ethical dilemma scenario: Kelly is a 24-year-old newly licensed addiction and drug counselor, working at a community behavioral health agency that provides support services in clients’ homes. Kelly provides addiction counseling services for Miguel, a 45-year-old Hispanic male with cocaine use disorder. Miguel is disabled and resides in a low-income housing community with his elderly mother. Kelly has worked with Miguel for 3 weeks, but she is experiencing challenges developing a rapport with him. Miguel made a comment to Kelly that she is too attractive and young to provide addiction counseling services. Kelly overlooked the comments and continued to work with Miguel.
In the fourth week of session, Miguel is eating lunch in the kitchen when Kelly arrives for their session. Miguel invites Kelly to have lunch with him as they have their session. Kelly declines initially, but Miguel insists that she join him at the table for lunch. Miguel informs Kelly that he will be willing to open up a bit more in today’s session. Kelly decides to join Miguel at the table and only drinks a glass of water. During the session, Miguel begins to open up about his time in the military, how he became disabled, and how his injury led to his drug addiction.
