Inquiry: What questions came up for you during this week’s readings?

PART TWO: For your final assignment, you will be responding to a hypothetical case study of a college student seeking coaching support. Here are eight sample case studies you can select from: https://canvas.uw.edu/courses/1693647/pages/case-studies-for-final-essay-slash-presentation You have two options for this final assignment: writing an essay, or creating and uploading a presentation (i.e., a slideshow or some other creative format). Choose whichever format you’re most comfortable with! If you have another idea for how to share your learning, feel free to reach out: sbagley@uw.edu

Here are steps to follow:
1) Pick a case study and familiarize yourself with this hypothetical student.
2) Describe a coaching plan for working with this student. How would you approach supporting them? Include at LEAST six coaching skills and strategies that we’ve discussed in class. Be sure to explain the WHY behind your choices. Remember that this assignment is designed to show us how you might apply what you’ve learned this quarter.
3) In your coaching plan include at least 5 direct citations (quotes, with page numbers listed) from your course readings. (They can all be from your core textbook, OR a mix from across assigned readings.)

Here is an example of a direct citation: To help Anika, I would be sure to paraphrase so I can “reflect back what she has said… in order to check the meaning” (van Nieuwerburgh, 2020, p. 55). Note that for your citations, it’s okay to choose portions of a sentence from the reading rather than the entire thing; just be sure to use ellipses …. if you are cutting something out. Other notes to help you: Since this is a brand new course and we are piloting this final assignment, we welcome any feedback or questions. Please share! Is something confusing or unclear? How can we make this assignment more student-friendly? These AI-generated case studies are all hypothetical (but hopefully realistic enough that you can imagine yourself interacting with this student). If you’d like, you can generate sample dialogue or scenarios with this student as part of your essay or presentation. You can imagine and write about any number of coaching meetings with this student. You should definitely include at least an initial meeting, and probably at least one follow-up meeting. Be sure to include yourself in this project. That is, how are you showing up as a coach for this hypothetical student? We know that coaching and mentoring can be supportive across identity markers, AND also that it can be helpful if you personally identify with certain aspects of your coachee’s identity. What’s most important is that you acknowledge cultural humility, and take steps to understand where they are coming from. Remember: you DON’T have to have all (or even any) of the answers for this student. Your job is to present a plan for supporting them in reflecting on their challenges and coming up with ideas to try. In terms of format, you can either write an essay or prepare an electronic presentation.

Option 1: Essay Guidelines

Your essay should be between 1,000-2,000 words in length and address all prompts above. APA Style is standard for the College of Education, but you can use any style guidelines (i.e., MLA or Chicago) as long as you are using them consistently. OWL Purdue is a great resource: APA 7th EditionLinks to an external site.

Option 2: Electronic Presentation Guidelines

Your presentation should include between 1,000-2,000 words (not all on the slides!) and address all prompts above. We anticipate that most of your words will be on your Notes for the slides. Be as visually creative as you’d like on the slides, incorporating images, etc. You can record yourself sharing the slideshow presentation, or simply submit it as a document. Be sure we can see and read your notes.
