To what extent does your chosen UK based Development Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), working on one of the following development issues (water, child soldiers, food and nutrition, gender equality or sustainable development), meet the criteria for development NGO legitimacy as defined in Atack’s article published in the academic journal World Development in 1999? 1. Read the following article: Iain Atack (1999), ‘Four criteria of development NGO legitimacy’, World Development, v 27:5, pp 855-864. (it would be attached below. Note (a) what it says about the definition of Legitimacy (the key concept; you may read beyond this article to flesh out the definition of legitimacy) and (b) the criteria used to determine whether it is present in any specific organisation (make sure to understand what each of the four criteria of development NGO legitimacy entails). 2. Identify a UK based NGO that operates in the Global South on one of the following development issues: Water, Child Soldiers, Food & Nutrition; Gender Equality; Sustainable Development. 3. Research the NGOs website and annual reports for evidence related to the legitimacy criteria discussed in Atack (1999). Note a selection of examples/quotes/quantitative data to cite as supporting evidence. You might find strong, weak or no evidence for each criterion. All results are valid/useful. 4. Evaluate the extent to which the chosen NGO may be considered legitimate with reference to the four criteria in Atack’s definition of legitimacy. 5. Create and submit a Table that presents your findings against each criterion of legitimacy for your chosen NGO and whether it can be supported by evidence from the NGO’s website (list/cite the supporting evidence in the table). 6. Present your overall conclusion in a short paragraph (approximately 350-400 words). The overall word limit is 2000 words.
