Each student will have an individual topic chosen from under one of the categories of disability under IDEA. The focus of the report will require students to design a case study of a child with special needs. The paper should be 5-7 pages in length excluding the title page and reference page (i.e. 7-9 pages including title and references pages) and should include an initial section of overview information and then a section about the case study. While some candidates may have access to a child to use for the case study, the majority of candidates will be asked to create a hypothetical “textbook” case study meaning a case study whose characteristics are backed up by the research on the disorder. The report must include the following:
Title
A. Research Paper
The following information needs to be provided according to literature/research (scholarly sources and textbook readings) with references by following APA.
Overview of Disability/Disorder
Descriiption/Definition
Causes
Milestones (benchmarks/normal language development timetable/the onset of age)
Assessment & Intervention
Assessment
Characteristics of a certain disorder
What assessment tools are used to diagnose or identify children with a certain disability/disorder?
List 1-2 tools with details (names, scores, and levels)
Intervention
What are the evidence-based interventions or instructional strategies to help a child with the disability/disorder?
This should be answered from the perspectives of medicine/OT/PT, social work, psychology, and/or classroom teachers. You are a classroom teacher. You should include the strategies from the perspective of classroom teachers and parents since one of these strategies will be used as a rationale for developing your Assessment 4 (a lesson plan & presentation).
B. Case Study Child (early childhood Birth- Grade 2)
I believe everyone has a focus learner (B-2) in your mind now because your research topic, fact sheet, Assessments 3 & 4 are based on your focus learner.
Family, Culture, Educational Needs, Strengths, Classroom Modifications, Testing/Related Services
What’s your focus learner’s background (age, gender, grade level, ethnicity, family culture/structure, learning interests/strengths, education needs, etc.)?
Has the child been diagnosed?
Does the child have an IEP/IFSP? What’s the IEP/IFSP goal?
What classroom accommodations and/or related services has the child received in the school?
Home-School Relationship & Strategies for Working with Parents
Has the school/teacher set up a plan to include strong communication between the school and the family? If yes, what are the strategies which can be backed up by literature/research? If not, what will be the strategies which are backed up by literature/research?
