Conflict Case Study Week #3
Wendy Lee is the manager of a 24 bed surgical ICU in a large acute care facility. Wendy has a large staff of 63 nurses and 20 support staff. The nursing staff are diverse in experience and educational back-ground. Wendy’s impression is that the team works well together and overall the unit is functioning as expected and meeting all unit outcomes.
Donna Jacks, RN, has worked for one year in the ICU. Donna returned to nursing school and completed her BSN degree following a divorce and 15 years as a housewife. Donna is somewhat reserved but proud of her accomplishments as a single mother and adult returning to the workforce.
Brenda Knowles, RN, has worked in the ICU for 7 years. Brenda obtained her ADN in her early 20’s and is completing her RN to BSN, expecting to graduate in two semesters. Brenda is known on the unit for her assertive personality and “get it done” attitude.
Donna requests a meeting with Wendy to discuss a schedule change. Donna is requesting to switch from her current weekend rotation to the opposite weekend rotation. Wendy explains to Donna that the only way this is possible is if another nurse would be willing to switch weekends. Donna begins to cry and states that this is just not the unit for her and she is contemplating quitting. Wendy knows that Donna has performed well above average expectations for a novice RN. As the conversation unfolds Donna reveals her reason for requesting a switch is due to Brenda. Donna states that Brenda purposefully leaves Donna out of weekend staff activities. Donna provides several examples of times which Brenda alienates Donna from activities.
In your response, answer the following questions.
What type of conflict is occurring?
What strategy would you recommend to Wendy to resolve this conflict?
