38. The transition to adulthood is a period of about 10 years or more. The length of this period of development depends upon many factors, and has changed over the generations. This period of rapid physical and biological changes, which bring about concerns not present in previous stages of development. Why do adolescents focus so intensely on issues of body image, and in what ways are their concerns about their appearance expressed?
39. Which of the developing secondary sexual characteristics seem to generate a sense of pride among adolescent boys? Are there some such changes that typically trigger embarrassment?
40. For adolescent girls, what are the key features of sexual maturation? Do you think it is better to sexually mature before or after most of one’s peers? Please explain why you think this is so.
41. How old were your parents when you were born? Do you think they would have been more effective parents if they had been older or younger? Why or why not?
42. Can you think of instances in which adolescent judgment is different than judgment made by people just a few years older? What is your opinion of the advertisement for car insurance? (ad will be uploaded shortly)
47. Finally – we have reached the adult stage of development! There are actually three stages with the adult stage: early adulthood (appx 20-40), middle adulthood (appx 40-60), and later adulthood (appx 60-90) – give or take 5 years or so. These are not fixed age periods, and are frequently beginning or ending earlier or later. These stages are both more unpredictable, and more variable than earlier stages of life, less closely tied with chronological age, and more closely linked to personal, social, and cultural forces or events, such as getting married, starting a job or career, or having a child. Please explain the two types of events that can happen: normative events, and idiosyncratic (non-normative) events, and how they may affect adult development. Please give some examples.
48. Bernice Neugarten was a former professor of mine who came up with the concept of “age clocks”. What is an age clock, and why is it an important concept to be aware of?
49. Young adulthood is a pretty much a healthy time of life, when people reach their peak physical skills and conditioning. However it is a time that some our basic healthy or unhealthy behaviors are formed, much of which will impact our lives when we are older adults. Do you believe that we will see comparable increases in maximum physical performance in the next 50 years as we have in the past 50? Why or why not?
50. What reasons might a prospective parent give for wanting to have children at a young age? What reasons might he or she give for wanting to have children later in adulthood? Why?
51. Two of the major life’s tasks begin and are formed in early adulthood: work and family. Choosing a romantic partner is part of this transition into adulthood. How does choosing a romantic partner differ for young adults living in the US versus other cultures around the world?
52. How do people decide which career or job will be the best choice for them?? How has your background and opportunity entered into your work choices, or not?
53. Times have certainly changed since your parents and grandparents were young adults! Please read, the “Changing Perspectives” article (see attached document), and discuss the possible living arrangements of young adults, and what is the positive and negative of each. What options did you choose in your 20’s, and what were your reasons for rejecting other living arrangement options?
54. What factors might explain why many people feel uncomfortable about wives earning as much or more income than their husbands? How do you feel about this issue?
