Write an essay in which you discuss the pain of the world today

Assignment Question

Write an essay in which you discuss the pain of the world today (be specific and brief!) and ways to soothe ourselves with art of any sort (literature, music, film, paintings, etc.,), You will include in your discussion AND IN YOUR THESIS statement Wislawa Szymborska’s poem “Consolation.” You must also come up with two other examples of healing art/escapist art/comforting art. Don’t be overly obvious here! You MUST pick examples which put you (or someone else) into an altered state so that you can forget the here and now! Use real examples of people you know or your own choice in “soothing art.” Remember, we are talking about art in all its varieties! We are not talking about exercise of drugs or alcohol.Include a strong thesis statement, sharp details and evidence, and make sure your essay is well organized.

a. Winning strategy for a strong start: Open with a one sentence thesis statement which names the Szymborska poem as one example, and then also states your clear point about the issue. The opening paragraph should also include mention of your two other specific examples of art.

b. Winning strategy for a strong essay body:

Create three (or so) separate body paragraphs beginning with nuanced transitional language. Each paragraph will be a separate large block of evidence.

c. Winning strategy for a strong closing paragraph: Your concluding paragraph DOES NOT repeat any of the language in your opening paragraph. Your essay is an exploration for you and your reader, and you have ended up in a different place from where you’ve begun.

Thus you final paragraph should include “enhanced eloquence” of some sort, such connecting your thesis to the wider world. Include a unique and college level essay title. Your first sentence must be a thesis statement naming the artists and/or works you have chosen to discuss. DO NOT open your essay with vague generalities or “throat clearing.” Get straight to the point! You will include separate body paragraphs (opening with nuanced transitional language) including specific evidence and details which you will expand upon after naming. Your closing paragraph will include “enhanced eloquence” (which we will discuss in class); this means that you will discuss the journey your essay exploration has taken you upon. You will not merely repeat your opening paragraph or thesis wording.
