Movie review: Matrix

Movie review: Matrix

Movies are one way through which individuals raise their opinions and share their views and issues with the rest of the people. Movies are furthermore a source of entertainment and producers try their best to ensure that they prepare a film that always arouse the instincts of the viewers. This paper reviews one of the movies produced in 1991, “Matrix”.

The movie protagonist is Thomas Anderson also called Neo in the film.  Neo lives two lives in that during the day  he works as a computer programmer and at night  he changes his job as a hacker.  At daytime, he is called Thomas and at night, is referred to as Neo.  He is a man that questions his reality (Best, 2012). Because of his knowledge in computer, Morpheus one of the legendary computer brand invites Neo to work for him. Morpheus is a wanted terrorists and the government is after him. Because of Neo’s relationship with Morpheus, police pursue them for the criminal activities they are perpetrating.  Trinity links Neo to Morpheus and the three are like-minded rebels that struggle to overthrow matrix (Best, 2012). Matrix is a concept or machines that even though live off the human bodies, they have imprisoned their mind and hide them from the reality. Therefore, these three devote themselves to unraveling this and freeing themselves to be able to experience the reality.

The movie is science fiction and full of impressive excitement. At the beginning, the movie is captivating but as it progresses, it retreats by redefining the concept of nature as it ends with shootouts. The movie could have ended or reached its climax by leaving the audience in imaginations as opposed to an obligatory ending through weapons (Shepard, 2003).  The concept is experienced in many movies, which demonstrate how bad people fire many rounds of fire, but doe not shoot good people. This is also manifest in the films making it look a bit plan and lacking in innovation. The movie also adopts some of the ideas and premises in other movies such as strange days and Dark city. This therefore makes it look fun especially when it adopts to some of the Hong Kong action movies. The directors of the film, which includes Andy Wachowski and Larry, are some of the best moviemakers having made a successful movie such as Bound. Therefore, their experiences make them to produce a better movie that is able to attract and provide entertainment as well, as convey various concepts to the audiences.

The three, Morpheus, Trinity, leather clad warrior and Neo are convinced that the world is not a reality but rather a form of virtual reality. They believe that they have been blinded by the system to remain obedience to the authorities (Ebert, 1991). In a conversation, Morpheus informs Neo that their eyes have been blinded by wool and therefore they cannot see or perceive that they are slaves.  Therefore, the intention of the three is to unfold or to crack the framework that they believe holds the matrix to free the humankind.  According to Morpheus, Neo is the right individual that is able to lead them because of his physical strength as well as mind power.  Those against their quests and plans are the Agents also referred to as Blues Brothers. The battle in the movie happens in a virtual reality meaning that it is only the minds of the heroes that is involved in the fight (Rozen, 2003).  This however does not mean that they cannot be killed, as it is not possible for the body to live without the mind.

The Matrix does not have blood and flesh figures or creatures behind its illusion rather it is only the computer program, which thinks, and learn. Agents in the film, function as opponents.  Therefore, the film does not provide an expansive explanation as to why the matrix making program had to go to the extend it went (Shepard, 2003).  Even though a program is able to run on its own and provide tangible rewards on its own, an intelligent program such as the one adopted in the movie may cause terrifying logic to the decisions that it makes (Hall, 2010). Therefore, this movie leaves the fate of the world to the combat that represent the good and the evil. Therefore, there is some sought of confusion. For instance, incase the Matrix is plugged from the system does it mean that the many billons of people that depend on the system will die, loss their identity or that will befall to them? These are some of the flaws in the movie and which show the limitation of thought and creativity on the part of the directors.

However, having said this, the movie is recommendable as it has a number of virtues that are worth pointing and even being adopted in other movies. The design and the kinetic energy, which powers the movie, are superb. Furthermore, the movie uses animation and flawlessly integrated special features regions in its cyberspace that makes it appear greater, creative and appealing to the eye (Ebert, 1991). Fearsome creatures such as octopi are created making it somehow scary and entertaining. Bodies are morphosized  and also use f/x  as we see Trinity and Neo run horizontally on walls,  and even are able to hang in air for quite some time as they fight and exchange kicks with the opponents.   It also leaps through spaces, as it has thrilling clips and sequences that involve fights on the rooftops, battles over control of mind and helicopters rescues. These scenes are, very interesting and at the same time intriguing making an audience feel entertained.

The various characters exhibit high level of performance.  Every character plays his or her part well making the movie have that harmony and balance. For instance, Carrie-Anne Moss who plays the role of trinity shows a sensational title sequence before even the movie can recall her as woman. She exemplified high level of perfectionism. The movie is therefore influential as it helps to broaden the thinking capacity of human beings. The viewers are actually challenged on how the science fiction movie manages to highlight and convey its themes. It is therefore a movie that is of good standards that motivates and encourages other people to come up with more sophisticated high quality and innovative movies that impact on the lives of the people in the world (Ebert, 1991).

I can confidently say that Matrix is one of my best movies that I have watched and I cannot regret for spending my time to watch it. The movie entertained me but would have wished it to be more challenging.  It could have flowed smoothly if it adhered to its material to an audacious conclusion to not conclude or strive at a victory but rather at revelation. The ending could have been transformational and not a sensational action ending. Nevertheless, Matrix is interesting, engaging and I would recommend those that have never watched it to consider watching to have their own feel and thoughts about the same.
