It is common knowledge that there\’s a correlation between increased births and war. The end of WWII brought a \’baby-boom\’ (the \”boomer generation\”) to many countries. A very large number of people were born from 1944-1956 in the UK, and 1946 – 1957 in the US. (There are no specific dates.) In the U.S., births surged from 222,721 in January, 1946 to 339,499 in October, 1946! By the end of the 1940\’s 32 million U.S. babies were born! (Wikipedia)
The issue is that in 2008, Social Security payments to retirees exceeded the income from Social Security taxes. U.S. workers blame the problem on government mismanagement.
Review the discussion on p.435 and read the two statements under \”You decide\” and discuss this topic amongst yourselves. This is an issue that my generation faces and that you and future governments will also have to face. Do you know enough about the Social Security System? Do you pay into the Social Security System? Will it provide enough for you to retire on? These are just some suggested questions.
