Q.2. A guideline of passing exams: How to and not to prepare and pass exams
- Be calm do not panic.
When studying for an examination, one should realize that since they have maintained good class attendance during class hours and have done previous class assignments, they already possess enough knowledge on the same subject to make them pass the examination. This self-assurance will help them pass the examinations and control panic. If one finds him/herself in a panic situation, they should take several deep breaths and shift attention to believing that they can. One should also avoid studying at the last time. Studying for an exam just a few hours or days to the exams makes people panic and reduces the retention rate. On the contrary, if one doesn’t like attending lessons and doesn’t care about what assignments were done or even when they were submitted their level of tension increases. Panicking will negatively shift their attention to the side of inability to pass. This makes them fail in examinations. Moreover learners who lack confidence end up failing.
- Learners should know the areas to be covered by the examination.
Examinations vary in their content and coverage. Knowing what the examination will entail will enable the learners to plan the time they have well. Learners should be able to get the areas that they will be tested on from the subject teacher. One should capture details like time line, diagrams, and level from the teacher. Learners should begin by studying the core areas, skills and concepts required. This is especially when time is limited. If one studies for an examination that they do not know its coverage or content, they will waste time studying useless material for an examination. Coverage areas mainly include the areas that the teacher was stressing on, review sheets and areas that textbooks highlight as crucial. It is also important to know the form of presentation that the examination will take for example; it can be essay, multiple choice or even oral. Exams are also divided into sections with varying marks; one should know how many points each section carries to be able to plan your time well. On the contrary, learners who sit for examination without information on its divisions and the number of scores leads to wastage of time in simple questions that carry very little marks. If one reads every book they come across and don’t care about the mastery of core skills necessary they end up failing. Others sit for examinations that they don’t know the content and mode of presentation hence they present answers wrongly and get frustrated in the exam room. Ignoring such details leads to panicking hence failure.
- Have a plan on how to study, one should not just study.
When one makes a study time they are able to have enough time to study, to remember, and even to relax. This plan is guided by the amount of time available before the actual examination. This means that the study time available will enable them to schedule the plan to either be long or short. It is also important that learners evaluate themselves and realize the subjects they are not well versed with so that they allocate more time for it. Learners should not forget the subject and topics that are well versed with. Time to review them should also be planned for. On the contrary, one can choose to allocate more time to interesting subjects than those that are difficult hence end up failing. One can also study without a time schedule and read anytime they feel like and relax for most of the time if they want to fail. One can also aim at studying until the very hour of the examination if they want to look confused in the exam room. They can also allocate longer breaks or so many study hours hence avoid balancing study time and breaks when they want to fail. Students can also be ignorant of their weaknesses for example the subjects and topics that they do not understand well hence avoid them completely until they fail in examinations. Being ignorant of one’s ability and weaknesses will lead to poor preparations hence failure in examinations. One can also read all day and night making their mind fatigued hence unable to remember what they read and therefore fail in examinations. Student can also go to the examination rooms late on the examination day this results in panic hence erode their confidence.
- Learners should ask questions and take note, they should not just listen and get withdrawn.
When a learner finds an area that they do not understand they should ask for help from others and take note of the answers. This makes the point stick. Learners should not just ask their friends as this may result in wastage of time in sharing unnecessary things. Study groups are also important they make learners gain extra points, styles of handling questions and even easier methods. However, learners can get into groups of unserious people and end up failing in examinations. They can also discuss with close friends who divert their attention from academic work to discussing other affairs but not preparing thoroughly for examination hence failure in examinations. Students can also remain silent while they don’t understand a concept and wait until they fail due to ignorance.
- Learners should learn to memorize, they should not imagine that they can remember
Learners should memorize every examinable detail. One can use mnemonics like abbreviations, rhymes, imagery and so on. It is good to create personal ways of memorizing. Learners can also write down what they have studied. It is good to relax and memorize this assures of a better grade and adds to your confidence. On the contrary, students can just read and re-read and then rest imagining that they will recapture everything that they read. This makes them forget and end up failing in examinations. Students can also read, avoid relaxing and memorizing hence end up scoring low grades since they do not remember most of the work that they had studied prior to the examination. This is a poor way of preparing for an examination. They can just read and without and deliberate trial on remembering. This makes sure that they fail since even in the examinations they will just read the questions without remembering anything related to the questions. Their reading will be good but they will recall nothing hence write nothing and end up failing.
