For the essay assignment, students will have the choice to write on one of two possible paper prompts to be provided by the instructor. The paper should be 5-6 double-spaced pages in length (12-pt Times New Roman font) and will pertain to either Son of the Revolution or My Fight for a New Taiwan. As the final line of the paper, each student must handwrite the following sentence to be accompanied by her/his signature: “This essay represents my own original work; all material from other sources has been properly documented.”

Please find below the prompt for the essay assignment. Liang Heng and Lu Hsiu-lien lived in different places but experienced times of great struggle that affected their lives and their families in China and Taiwan, respectively.
What were their dreams and goals in life? How did they seek to achieve these goals? What challenges did they face? What do their experiences tell us about process of political change in the societies in which they lived?
