Art (Fine arts, Performing arts)

Project 2

Project Introduction:

In this project, you need to choose an artist or an architect of your interest, research related professional work, and write about this subject’s achievements in the world of art and architecture. In the first part of the project, you need to complete research on the chosen subject. You have to select two representative buildings if the subject is an architect or three works of art if the subject is an artist. Finally, you need to analyze the pieces in terms of their formal qualities and design. In the second part of the project, you need to consider issues, such as the characteristic style, preferred techniques and methods of work, and sources of ideas and inspiration of the artist or architect. In the second part, you also need to examine your personal response to the chosen subject and the representative work.

Course Objectives Tested:

Describe the concept of art.
Describe the concept of creative process.
Discuss and analyze the visual elements of art.
Define the terminology relevant to the analysis of visual elements and sources of inspiration in art.
Discuss and analyze the aspects of design.
Assess the various methodologies for understanding and evaluating works of art.
Discuss the artistic techniques and the technical skills required to create two-dimensional works of art.
Discuss the artistic or architectural techniques and the technical skills required to create
three-dimensional works of art.
Discuss art and architecture in relation to the history of select cultures.
Assess key works of art and architecture.
Identify available resources on art and architecture using the ITT Tech Virtual Library and the Internet.

Project 2 Part 1 Tasks:
The first step in the process is to find an artist or an architect that interests you. Begin by flipping through your textbook or other art and architecture books. The local bookstore or library is a good place to browse. Select a person about whom you can find research material to allow you to complete your paper. Ideally, you should perform some preliminary research before deciding on a topic. Otherwise, you could end up with a paper topic that has little material available to you.
After you find a subject to investigate, research the person’s professional life and work. Start with the most general resources and gradually seek out more specialized resources. Start with encyclopedias and general texts to get a feel for your topic. There are numerous Web resources available, either through the ITT Tech Virtual Library or a search engine.

After you have gathered general information about your topic, delve into more specialized resources. EbscoHost—available through the Periodicals link on the ITT Tech Virtual
Library—will connect you to the archives of several art periodicals, journals, and other resources that may contain information on your topic area. While searching these sources, it is best to use simple search terms to produce more “hits.” Your final resource should be books from the Ebrary and other texts. The Ebrary of the ITT Tech Virtual Library contains many texts that focus on specific issues in the visual arts. These are excellent resources for very specific and detailed information but do not provide an overview of a topic. Keep your search terms simple. Another important resource is the “Further Reading” list in the back of your textbook on page 558, which includes important general works.

For this part of the project, you need to produce a well-written paper that focuses on two buildings if you chose an architect or three works of art if you chose an artist. Try to select famous examples of your chosen subject’s work because these will be better documented and researched. Remember that, in the second part of Project 2, you will use the same artworks or buildings to discuss the style, creative methods, and sources of inspiration of their creator. The primary objective of this paper is to demonstrate your knowledge of the subject and your acquired skills of research, art analysis, and art appreciation.

Make sure that you answer the following questions for each artwork:

What does it look like?
How would you categorize its style?
What is the subject matter? What is the content?
Does the form reflect the content? How?
What visual elements and design aspects does the artwork emphasize? Why?
How does the artist manipulate the technique or techniques to achieve a desired effect?
Make sure that you answer the following questions for each building:

What does it look like?
How would you categorize its style?
What is the function? What is the setting?
Does the form reflect the function? How?
What architectural elements and design aspects are emphasized? Why?
How does the architect manipulate construction methods and techniques to achieve a desired effect?
Remember to provide the following information for your chosen artworks or architectural examples: title, artist or architect, date, medium, and location.

Project 2 Part 2 Tasks:
For this part of the project, you need to produce a well-written paper that analyzes in detail the following important aspects of the professional life and work of your chosen artist or architect:
The style or movement with which the majority of the work is associated.
The artistic technique or techniques, methods, or systems of construction with which the majority of the work is produced.
The ideas and sources of inspiration that can be detected in the artistic or architectural output—you can focus primarily, but not exclusively, on examples you discussed in Part 1 of the project.
In this part of the project, you have the opportunity to offer your own opinion about the work of the artist or architect. To do that, answer the following questions:

What do you like about this artist or architect?
What are the qualities that you find most attractive in the work of this artist or architect?
What is your judgment about the originality of the artwork of this artist or architect?
Deliverables and Format:
Submit your paper in a Word document in not more than 1,500 words.
