Chapter 4 covers language and communication. One of the topics discussed in this chapter is focal language, and the purpose of this assignment is to gain a better understanding of focal language and culture. Pick a group that utilizes focal language (e.g. gamers, sports teams, military, etc.) and provide the following information:
– Define focal language – Identify the group that utilizes the focal language. – Provide a list of at least ten terms and their corresponding definitions that the group uses. – Explain why focal language is important to this group and the purpose of the focal language to the group. – Explain how outsiders/non group members may be confused by the focal language and how this identifies and reinforces group membership vs. non membership.
Special note: Be sure to identify who your cultural informant is in regards to the focal language you are describing. You can use yourself or another individual as your cultural informant, but this must be clearly identified in the paper. Failure to do so will be interpreted as plagiarism. If you utilize a cultural informant other than yourself, you must properly cite that individual and the interview in your references cited page.
