Language and Inclusion in School
As educators, we need to prepare our students to engage with the ever-changing world. In order to effectively do this, we should be prepared to teach skills that will evolve with new knowledge and programs. We should focus on long-life skills like technological fluency and effective communication, while promoting tolerance. In this Section, we address the impact of technology on literacy, and explore examples of cultural bias in curricular materials.

Create a Lesson Plan
Educators must strive to promote tolerance and acceptance of diversity in the classroom. One of the most important ways to do that is to reduce cultural bias in curricular materials. Cultural bias can be apparent or insidious. For this Activity, examine three books commonly used in elementary classrooms for evidence of cultural bias and the possibility of linguistic discontinuity. Compile your findings into an essay and include specific examples to support your opinions.
Length: 7 pages. Please include at least 4 scholarly References (At Least 1 Peer-reviewed article—the more the better).
Your essay should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts that are presented in the course and provide new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your submission should reflect graduate-level writing and current APA standards, and should reference at least one peer-reviewed journal article.
Learning Outcomes:
Assess a variety of language in spoken and written, formal and informal, social and academic contexts.
Develop approaches to enhance language learning in the classroom.
Assess conditions that are optimal for language acquisition.
