Successful Learning of More than One Language
Anyone who has lived or travelled abroad can attest to the bilingual and multilingual skills of residents of many countries. In other nations, foreign language instruction begins early in the elementary years of schooling and continues throughout the formal academic program. Research suggests language learning becomes more difficult with age, yet, we often hear stories of immigrants who came to another country and quickly learned local language and customs. In this Section, we explore the myths of language learning and have an opportunity to interview a bilingual individual.

Ascertain Key Factors in the Development of Bilingualism
Adults with bilingual skills can often offer insight to help teachers evaluate and support students who are also bilingual. In this activity, you will interview a bilingual adult to help understand what it is like to be bilingual or learn to be bilingual.
Interview a bilingual adult and try to ascertain the key conditions that contributed to his or her bilingualism. Be sure to find out the age at which the second language was introduced, the environment (home or school), and any other factors that might have been relevant to the learning experience. Compose a paper outlining what you learned from this process. Align your findings to the theories and practices that you have learned about as well as other research in the field.
Your essay should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts that are presented in the course and provide new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect graduate-level writing and current APA standards, and should reference at least one peer-reviewed journal article.
Learning Outcomes:
Create authentic language samples to enhance native language skills.
Develop approaches to enhance language learning in the classroom.
