The Role of Voting In a Democratic System

Voting is an important factor in democracy. It enhances fairness and justice for all people. When voting takes place, people choose their leaders. It is not possible to select leaders without voting since people will not have consensus. This is why voting has to be done by all who are interested. The winner of the election is the one with many votes. Democracy mainly favors the majority. If voting does not happen, the will of the majority will be violated, and the country will be similar to totalitarianism. Every viable person should participate in elections. It is unconstitutional to forbid a citizen to vote because of gender or race.

It is a civil right for every citizen to vote. It brings peace among the voters since they will accept the winner. Elections enable citizens to choose good leaders for their countries. Good leaders are a significant contributing factor to the welfare of the community and country in general. Elections also help to eliminate bad leaders by voting in others. Voting ensures protection of the future generations since the development done today by the current leaders, will benefit future offspring. For example, a good president ensures formulating policies, which will benefit future generations.

Preparation of election applies to both candidates and the voters. The candidates need to ensure they have handed in their registration forms to the electoral commission. All candidates carry out campaigns and rallies to create awareness to the voters. They present their manifesto to the voters. Selecting an appropriate leader could be a difficult task. Some leaders do not actually do according to what they promised. This is why it is important for people to be keen on the leaders they choose. It is definitely not wise to re-elect a leader who is not effective.

The voters also need to prepare themselves. The first thing is to acquire the necessary voting documents. In many countries, all voters must have a national identity card. It confirms citizenship. Others demand all voters must have a voter’s card. It also confirms a person is viable to vote. Voters need to acquire civic education about elections. They need to understand what should be done and how to do it. For instance, they need to know where they can cast their votes and how to do it. Currently, countries are using digital methods. Some people may not be familiar with the mode hence they need help. They also have an obligation of knowing about the candidates who are competing for the various positions. The period prior election is when to study candidates and make choices whom to elect.

Young people rarely vote due to several factors. They do not take time to understand the importance of voting. Some rely on their parents or older people to vote on their behalf. Today, young people prefer exciting activities. To some young people, election is a boring activity and waste of time. Only those who meet the requirement can vote. For example, only those who are eighteen years and above are eligible for voting. On the other hand, older people understand their civic role. They know they need to vote for good leaders. They also vote in large numbers due to experiences. For example, bad leaders in the past will influence older people to vote for better leaders.
