Response of “the pain of animals”

The pain of animals is an article in which the writer tries to let us empathize with his views. He gives us personal experiences involving an animal’s pain. By doing this, he gives us a chance to put ourselves in his situation by explaining the situation and his thoughts and emotions to us. The skill of getting the audience to relive ones experience helps add weight to a point as humans learn more from an experience than a story. It may be difficult for a person to relate to an animal especially when they rarely encounter the wild animals. Most people only know wild animals as wild but fail to realize that they have emotions and feelings therefore by giving a real life experience, they will come to the realization that it is real.

The reader appeals to readers emotions by using real personal experiences. He explains the situation in details and expresses his feelings therefore the reader empathizes with him. He also uses evidence obtained from real lab situations. He explains the inhumane experiences undergone by the lab animals. He tells of the needs denied to the animals and the evident emotional stress they undergo hence enabling the reader to realize that animals do have emotions and feelings. He refers to emotional experiences undergone by other humans in relation to animal cruelty therefore the readers understand that these incidents do actually occur and it is an issue that other humans, not only the writer, realize the importance of tackling the incidents.

Suzuki uses other sources to back up his arguments as this adds strength to his argument making the reader take more interest in the issue. For example, where he uses evidence from a film about use of chimpanzees in the laboratory he cites Jane Goodall’s experience in a SEMA facility where experimentation takes place with the use of chimpanzees as specimen (American Scientist, November-December, pg 683). In this experience, Jane relays how the baby chimpanzees lack affection that is required for correct growth of a child. The conditions of the habitat they live in. the reader by having this in depth information can understand the situation clearly and realize the magnitude and effect of the cruelty. By using quotations from world-renowned sources, such as BBC the reader is able to understand that this are issues that have attracted worldwide interest therefore the reader realizes the enormity of the problem.
