Newsworthiness

Newsworthiness

Chicago Tribute is one the new agencies that is involved in collection and dissemination of news to the members of the public. In order to convey news that is interesting and relevant to the members of the public the new auditors and writers have to ensure that the stories carried in the tribute are captured well and there is no irrelevant information. The stories carried in the paper op to be clear and precise so that the reader can get the actual information without struggling. In order to understand whether the gives worthwhile news to the members of the public, I will apply Dominick criteria of determining newsworthiness on the number of stories carried in this newspaper. The analysis will consider whether there is proximity in the stories, timeliness, human interest, consequences, prominence, and economics. If the stories have met this criterion then they are worthwhile reading them.

The newspaper carries a story of  exhausted passengers leaving a ship that drifted five days ago (Chicago Tribute, 2013). There is also a story about the Senate, which passed the law allowing the gay marriage practice in Illinois. There is also another story of a man who has been charged in relation to the murder of Bishop Ford. It is important to carry out an analysis on how the reporters of the stories have covered and reported the stories. The analysis will be based on the above-specified criteria.

Timeliness

Timeliness means that the news covered should be related to the current event that is happening in society. The three stories have fully met the criterion on timeliness as they relate to events that are currently occurring in the American society. For instance, the story on gay marriage is an issue that is of interest to the American. The residents of Illinois have been following up the story to determine its outcome. Therefore, the coverage of the story is timely and relevant to the readers as it directly relates to the issues affecting their society. The second story on the death involving Bishop Ford is not out of content(Chicago Tribute, 2013). In the story, the reporter has taken into account the issue of time given that the event of the story been covered happened recently. In addition, crime is something that occurs all the time across countries. Murder of a high profile personality has great interest on the people, and therefore it is timely (Chicago Tribute, 2013).

Proximity

Based on this criteria, the stories have fully been able to meet the proximity standard. The story related to the geographical locality of the readers. For instance, the murder is of interest to all the readers as they would like to know the actions taken against the murderer. It helps people know how society treats both the criminal and those affected within the given region. Given that the readers of Chicago Tribute come from the State of Chicago, it is important for the story covered to be related to issues that touches the state, or those issues that are of interest to the federal government (Chicago Tribute, 2013). The stories fully relate to the intended readers.

Prominence

One of the stories has met the criterion of prominence. The story on the death involving Bishop Ford fully meets this criterion. Given that the Bishop is a popular figure in the society, covering his story would catch the attention of the readers. This develops interest on the part of the readers. People will feel the need to purchase the paper and follow up the developments on the murder of the Bishop.

Consequence

The criterion on consequence has been fully met in the three stories covered in the newspaper. For instance, the story on gay marriage is of importance to the people of Chicago. The stories inform the reader what is happening to other states and the laws that they are passing in relation to the issues of national controversy. Every American citizen is interested in the steps that will be taken on the issue of gay marriages and covering the story is crucial as it informs the reader the new developments on the issue.

Human Interest

The criterion on human interest has been fully met by the stories that have been carried in the newspaper. For example, the story of the arrival of crippled ship is of human interest to the people of Chicago. The reader is more interested to understand the welfare of those who were in the ship. The story is covered in depth and fully relates to the interest of the reader.

Economics

The reporters put after each story some economic issues such as adverts that are of interest to the reader. This allows a reader to know the financial implications of a given undertaking. These stories do not have any quoted financial data. However, leaders can know, for instance the financial implications of ship that looses directions. In the case of the murder of the Bishop, the financial consequences to the family and the government in the process of the criminal justice are clear.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the story covering the age of Michel Jordan turning 50 should not have received much coverage (Chicago Tribute, 2013). More pressing issues of national importance should have been given much space and coverage rather than using a whole page to cover the story of one individual which does not add value to the lives of the reader. The reporter should not cover stories because they are of interest to some group of people but they should rather cover those stories that are of societal interest and welfare. The paper carries news that is worthy reading as most of them have met Dominick criterion.
