RESEARCH TOPIC: The nature and consequences of the perceived threat about the events of 11 September 2001.
HYPOTHESIS
The perceived personal threat on terrorism is different from the perceived national threats.
Personal threat hypothesis- stated that the personal threats will greatly impact than the national threat and is more likely to change behavior therefore risk reduction.
Men will be less frightened by the terrorism as compared to women.
METHODOLOGICAL APPROACH :The method used was telephone survey. One thousand two hundred and twenty one (1221) adults over the age of 18 were surveyed in Queens, Suffolk and Nassau counties in New York. The survey took place between 20th October and 11th November 2011. The body which conducted the survey was the centre For Survey Research at Suny At Stony-Brook.
DATA: The data collected was one shot. This is because they randomly generated a digital dial from a phone with at least one listed residential number. They also randomly selected respondents within given households using the last birthday method. Finally, an indication of one shot data was the fact that the residents of some counties were oversampled f, for example residents of Long Island whereas others were under sampled such as those of Queens County during the selection of the sample. The data was then reweighted to show a true prevalence of the combined population.
FINDINGS: The hypothesis of the research was confirmed. One clear indication is where about 82% of the respondents were still afraid of another future terrorist attack.
PROBLEMS/ISSUES: The survey method used was arguably not an appropriate one since reaching people via telephone is not as effective as face to face interviews whereby people are able to express much information on a one-on –one interaction. The data collection should have been analyzed using better methods that categorize the data for easier understanding even to the future generations who will read the work. Finally, the research should have come up with a number of research questions that would help during the interpretation of the findings in a bid to enable checking of whether all the questions have been captured in the findings.
